Australia is a paradise of diverse and pristine landscapes that make it the perfect destination for nature-loving travelers. With over 700 national parks, tourists in the land down under have no shortage of options to choose from, ranging from protected coastal ecosystems to the dry and spacious outback. If you’re considering a trip to Australia and want to experience the great outdoors, read on to learn more about some of its best national parks.

Royal National Park

As the second-oldest national park in the world, Royal National Park in New South Wales has stood as an emblem of coastal beauty since 1879. The park is known for its idyllic beaches, dramatic cliffs, and hidden sea caves, which make it a haven for beach and nature enthusiasts alike. Visitors should be sure to check out the iconic Figure Eight Pools and take a stroll on the Coastal Track.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

In the northern outback, Australia’s Red Center is home to the spectacular Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, an expansive park recognizable by its massive copper-colored sandstones. These geological formations are considered sacred by the indigenous populations that have inhabited the area, and watching the sunset over the landscape, it’s easy to understand why.

Karijini National Park

For a traditional outback adventure, head to Karijini National Park in Western Australia. Known for its waterfalls and towering canyons, the park has an otherworldly feel rarely found outside of the deep wilderness. Hikers looking to explore the terrain can choose from any of 19 trails ranging from easy to challenging. We love the Dales Gorges Loop, a moderate hike that includes the tranquil Fern Pool and several scenic lookouts.

Are you dying for a bit of nature after being surrounded by buildings and traffic all day, every day? Did you know the concrete jungle also has some pretty awesome hikes? Well, okay, they’re not exactly in the city, but they are pretty close! You can easily take a train or drive to these locations from NYC.

Breakneck Ridge

This is one of the most popular hikes in the New York City area, and it’s totally understandable why! If you love a challenging (and adrenaline-inducing) hike, this one is great. A steep climb is totally worth the picturesque views from the top!

Bear Mountain

The Bear Mountain Loop Trail is another favorite in the area, although this one is considered more moderately challenging. You can even bring your dog, as long as it stays on a leash.

Old Croton Aqueduct Trail

The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail is much more of a stroll than a hike, but it doesn’t make it any less beautiful! You can jog, walk, push a stroller, or bike along this trail that leads to a beautiful historical landmark.

Pine Meadow Lake

Located in Harriman State Park, the Pine Meadow Lake trail is a great way to experience upstate New York without going too far out of the city! It has great views of the water and a moderately challenging path to keep you entertained.

There are so many reasons to go trekking or hiking while traveling. It’s a great way to move your body, connect with nature, get away from the busy hustle and bustle of modern life, and see what a new country really has to offer. There are some very famous treks out there that many people try, but the lesser-known ones are no less worth doing. Here are some we recommend.

Gheralta Mountains, Ethiopia, 6 – 9 miles

This trek will take your breath away for more reasons than one. The 1,000-year-old churches carved right into the cliffs and the stunning views will make you gasp, while the difficult free-form rock climbing it requires to see them will raise your heart rate. This is a challenging one, but it’s well worth it.

Lost City Trek, Colombia, 28 miles

This trek will take you through the Sierra Nevada jungles to Teyuna, the capital of the ancient Tayrona civilization, so lost that most people have never heard of it. If you go with an indigenous guide, you’ll also learn quite a bit of culture and history that you probably would never discover otherwise.

Cordillera Huayhuash Trek, Peru, 70 miles

If you want to be moved by mother nature’s most dramatic display of beauty, check out the Cordillera Huayhuash mountain range in central Peru. This hike will take you about ten days, covering 5,000-meter peaks and stunning turquoise alpine lakes. This is the kind of natural beauty that inspires people to paint and write poetry.
