As far as movie-themed tourist attractions go, it doesn’t get much better than Hobbiton. This magical place in the heart of New Zealand was built on the grounds of the former movie set for the Lord of the Rings series, and here’s what you should know before paying it a visit.

Crowded Attraction

Hobbiton isn’t one of those attractions that you can explore on your own, so get ready for big crowds during your visit. You’ll have to join a guided walking tour to fully explore it, and it’s highly recommended to stick to your group so you wouldn’t miss out on some important information during your tour.

Advanced Tickets

Hobbiton tickets sell out fast, so don’t wait until the last minute to buy yours. If you’re visiting New Zealand during the off-season, there’s a chance there are going to be free spots, but you shouldn’t take that risk because tickets sometimes sell out weeks or even months in advance.

Time Limit

If you think you can wander around Hobbiton and take pictures all day long—think again. Tours are limited to two hours, and you’ll have to sign up for another one if you want to stay for longer. To get a fuller experience, consider joining the Evening Banquet tour or Second Breakfast tour.

If you’re a major Lord of the Rings fan, you’ve probably considered visiting New Zealand before. The reason is obvious: the films were shot in the rolling mountains of this beautiful country. However, what you may not know is that the set for Hobbiton was actually maintained, and you can visit it!

Where It Is

All of the scenes that took place in the Shire were filmed in a place called Waikato, New Zealand. The set took place on Alexander Farm, a sheep farm that extends a whopping 1,250 acres long. When Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson first saw it, he knew he had found the perfect place to film the Shire.

What To Do There

There are actually tons of cool things you can do there, in addition to walking around and being astounded by the various Hobbit holes. You can grab a pint in the Green Dragon Inn, and take a tour of the whole location.

The History Behind It

Speaking of tours, you’ll learn all about how the Hobbiton set was maintained. The set was initially destroyed after the filming wrapped up, but once the films became incredibly successful, Jackson knew that it needed to be renovated so that fans could visit this location. So when The Hobbit was filmed in 2009, the production company built another 44 Hobbit holes! From then on, the Shire was a real place we could all visit!

The Hobbiton Movie Set is located near Matamata, a small agricultural town in the Waikato region, in New Zealand. Originally the property of The Alexander family, it was a 1,200-acre farmland and livestock ranch. But when The Hobbit movie director, Peter Jackson saw this land during an aerial search, he knew this was the perfect ground for making J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination come to life.

After negotiations with the owners, the transformation of the land began in March 1999. It included building 37 hobbit hole facades, gardens and hedges, a mill and a double arch bridge, as well as lifting a 29-ton oak, and recreating it to suit the book’s description of Bag End. The original set was not built to last, but only to be used for the purposes of the movie. However, as the popularity of the movies grew, so did the public’s interest in this magical looking place.

In 2010, before the filming of the prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the set was rebuilt to be more permanent and soon became a proper tourist attraction, offering a two-hour guided tour and many accompanying facilities. Highlights of the tour include Bagshot Row, the Party Tree, and Bilbo’s Bag End home. There are 44 hobbit holes on sight, some of which have been made to resemble actual homes that you can enter and see the earth-walled interiors from the movies for yourself.

After the tour, you can stop for refreshments at the “Shires Rest Cafe” or have a breakfast at the “Second Breakfast” restaurant. There is also the famous replica of the Green Dragon pub, where you can have a beer and enjoy the authentic movie atmosphere, surrounded by props and various Hobbit memorabilia.
