Jaipur is often referred to as “the Pink City of India” and that’s not a coincidence. This color definitely dominates its cityscape and many of its most prominent buildings happen to be pink. Here are some of Jaipur’s top attractions that will make you fall in love with this lively color all over again.

City Palace

City Palace is one of Jaipur’s most recognizable pink buildings, but it didn’t always look this way. Like many others in Jaipur, it was painted pink in honor of the Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII), as a sign of hospitality leading up to his visit to India in the 19th century.

Jawahar Kala Kendra

If you’re an art lover visiting Jaipur, you shouldn’t miss Jawahar Kala Kendra for the world. This art center was created with the goal to preserve Rajasthani arts and crafts and its unique modern building looks straight out of a Wes Anderson movie like many others in Jaipur.

Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is one of the timeless symbols of Jaipur and its biggest architectural marvel. Located on the very edge of the City Palace, it was built with red and pink sandstone and features a total of 953 tiny windows decorated with intricate latticework, which allowed royal ladies to observe everyday life from up high.

Jaipur is best known for its countless pink buildings and extravagant forts, but one of its top tourist attractions doesn’t fall under these categories. Jantar Mantar is one of the must-see attractions of India’s Pink City, especially if you have a passion for astronomy.

Jantar Mantar can best be described as a home to a collection of antiquated astronomical instruments. It’s the brainchild of Jaipur’s founder Jai Singh II, who ordered its constructions because he harbored an interest in mathematics, architecture, and astronomy. The monument was completed in 1734 and went through many renovations over the centuries.

Jantar Mantar was built with one mission in mind: getting the most accurate astronomical data available at the time of its building. 19 astronomical instruments on its premises, including the world’s largest sundial, were supposed to determine the position of celestial objects.

Many more precise and technologically advanced instruments were introduced since Jantar Mantar’s building, but that doesn’t take away from its beauty. If you’re an architecture or astronomy lover visiting Jaipur, it should definitely be one of the spots on your travel itinerary. Its doors are open between 9:00 am – 4:30 pm every day, and it’s located only a few minutes away from Jaipur’s City Palace.

India’s “Pink City” of Jaipur is best known for its beautifully colored palaces, but the forts you can find here are equally picture-perfect. They’re the best place to explore the rich history and architectural diversity of Jaipur, and these three deserve a spot on your bucket list.

Amber Fort

Also known as Amer Fort, this 16th-century hilltop palace is one of Jaipur’s main tourist attractions. The red sandstone and marble structure are separated into several different sections, filled with beautiful courtyards, gates, and cobbled paths, built in the Mughal architectural style.

Jaigarh Fort

Located on a hill overlooking the Amber Fort, this fortress was built to protect it from attacks. They’re connected by subterranean passages and are very similar in design. Jaigarh Fort is three kilometers long and it offers some of the most beautiful views in all of Jaipur.

Nahargarh Fort

Speaking of sweeping views, this fortress on the edge of the Aravalli hills is a photographer’s dream. It was built in the 18th century and its main purpose was to form a strong defense ring with the previous two forts. It’s now home to several tourist attractions, including a wax museum.
