Jordan’s capital of Amman is home to many sites of historical significance that allow you to dive into the country’s rich past. Some of the most important ones are located on the grounds of the Amman Citadel Hill, and here are three that you shouldn’t miss during your visit.

Temple of Hercules

Amman Citadel is the top tourist attraction of Jordan’s capital, and the Temple of Hercules is one of the sites that transformed it into such a huge hit. This Roman structure is actually an unfinished temple and only six columns remain. There’s also a hand-shaped stone statute on its premises, believed to be modeled after Hercules.

Jordan Archaeological Museum

Amman Citadel is the city’s most significant archeological site, so it’s only fitting for it to be home to Jordan Archaeological Museum. Its collection includes artifacts from prehistoric times to the 15th century, ranging from everyday objects to art and statues.

Umayyad Palace

This historic palace has been built during the first half of the 8th century, and you can still visit its remains. Despite the significant damage that it sustained over the years, its restored domed entrance chamber looks quite striking. It’s believed it was once used as a residence of an Umayyad official.

Jordan is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to travel destinations, especially in the Middle East. The country is full of interesting historical sites, otherworldly natural features, and even top-tier restaurants. While it’s not possible to explore all that Jordan has to offer in just a few days, much of its capital city Amman can be experienced in a weekend.

Whether you’ve got plans to travel to a country nearby or another part of Jordan, it may be worth considering a quick excursion to Amman to see what this ancient city is all about. Here’s how we recommend spending a weekend.

Take a Walk Down Rainbow Street

This street in downtown Amman named after a local movie theater is known for having some of the best shops and restaurants in the city. Rooftop dining is quite popular in Jordan, and Rainbow Street has no shortage of bars and cafes to do just that.

Explore the Roman Ruins

Amman is known as the City of Seven Hills, and atop one of those hills is the Amman Citadel, an archaeological site and one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited places. Within the site are ancient ruins including the Roman Temple of Hercules and a museum displaying other historical artifacts.

Check Out the Markets

At the end of Rainbow Street is Souk Jara, one of the largest and most popular markets in Amman. It’s held every Friday between May and September and is the perfect place to shop for everything from food to art to local antiques.

The Dead Sea is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Jordan, and most people coming here want to swim—or rather float—on its shores. Despite being truly extraordinary, the Dead Sea isn’t the only breathtaking natural wonder in this Middle Eastern country, and here are three more worth checking out.

Wadi Rum

Located in the far south of Jordan, Wadi Rum was responsible for kicking off the tourist industry in this country after being featured in the cult movie Lawrence of Arabia. This sandstone and granite rock valley is known by the name Valley of the Moon thanks to its bright shade and the unique rock formations on its grounds.

Dana Biosphere Reserve

Speaking of unique rock formations, you’ll find even more of them in this expansive nature reserve. Dana Biosphere Reserve became extremely popular with passionate hikers and adventurers thanks to its geological diversity and scenic landscapes.

Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo is one of the most mystical places in all of Jordan because it’s believed this was where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death. Even if it wasn’t for its religious background, Mount Nebo would leave us in awe with its breathtaking views of Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and the hills of Jerusalem.

It’s become a trend among the billionaires of the world to invest their resources into the advancement of space travel, and while that’s great for them, the surface of Mars is not something most of us can expect to see in our lifetime. That said, the deserts of Jordan don’t seem to look all that different from the red planet. They’ve even been used as filming locations for movies including The Martian and Dune. Travelers can take guided tours, but for the really adventurous, we recommend booking a night in a bubble hotel. Spend a night under the stars in comfort at any of these locations:

Petra Bubble

Petra Bubble considers itself to be a ‘luxotel.’ Located in the desert outside of the city of Petra, each bubble comes with a private hot tub. Breakfast and dinner are included, and a shuttle service is available to the city.

Wadi Rum Bubble Luxotel

Wadi Rum is also known as the Valley of the Moon and looking at pictures of the bubble hotel there, we have to say that’s pretty accurate. Visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi in the middle of the desert as they look out onto stunning views of an otherworldly terrain.

Aicha Luxury

Also located in the deserts of Wadi Rum, Aicha is the perfect place to stay for anyone looking for a little extra comfort. The bubbles themselves are gorgeous and the property is close to nearby attractions.

Jordan is a Middle-East country located on the east bank of the River Jordan. The official name of the country is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It’s a small country with a rich history, big biblical importance, and incredible landscapes. Here are some interesting facts about it.

Petra

On the list of the New Seven Wonders of the World is the city of Petra, with its temples, tombs, and caves, often called the Red Rose City. It was founded by the Nabateans more than 2,000 years ago. The entrance to the city is a long Siq Canyon with colorful cliffs.

The Lowest Point

The Dead Sea lays 420 meters below sea level, which makes it the official lowest point on the planet. If you enter the sea, you will float because of the amount of salt in the water. It’s around 10 times saltier than the ocean!

The Oldest City

Amman, the country’s capital, is one of the oldest cities in the world. It dates back to the Stone Age. The statues you can see there are also some of the oldest in the world. Don’t skip the Jordan Museum: it offers an incredible insight into the past of our planet.
