Ljubljana is truly charming and offers many amazing spots worth exploring, but the real magic happens once you step outside. Slovenia is so small that you can visit pretty much any place you want from its capital, and here are some of the very best day trip destinations worth checking out.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is the most Instagram-friendly spot in all of Slovenia, and it only takes an hour to reach it from Ljubljana. It will win you over with its beautiful scenery, including the mountains and forest that surround it and a tiny church located on a tiny island in its middle.

Postojna Cave

Slovenia has many natural wonders in store, and its caves are truly top of the line. Postojna Cave is a case in point, and it’s located less than an hour away from Ljubljana. This karst cave system is Slovenia’s No. 1 underground attraction, and it hosts everything from exhibitions to concerts.

Piran

The Slovenian Istria has a few pretty charming towns in store, and if you’re not sure which one to explore first, Piran is the way to go. It’s one of the most beautiful cities on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast and it’s worth the visit for its Venetian architecture alone.

If you want to feel like a local in every new city that you visit, even if your time there is limited, you’ll have to visit places that aren’t so touristy. From busy markets to public parks and tiny cafés, each city has countless places with a local vibe, including Ljubljana. Here are three spots in the Slovenian capital that will make you feel like a local.

Central Market

A visit to a busy local market is one of the best ways to feel at home in a brand-new city. When it comes to Ljubljana, the Central Market is the safest bet. It’s located in the very heart of the city, and you’ll find local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to arts and crafts.

Tivoli Park

If you want to sit back and relax in a busy public park while in Ljubljana, it doesn’t get much better than Tivoli. It’s Slovenia’s largest park and you can find everything from beautifully landscaped gardens and paved paths to notable buildings and sculptures on its grounds.

Ljubljanica Cafés

The capital of Slovenia lies on the river called Ljubljanica, and many of the city’s most popular attractions are located on its shores—including some pretty charming cafés. You should take a walk and pick the one that suits your taste, but Tozd and Cafetino are some of the most popular options.

Ljubljana may not seem like much at the first glance, but you’ll get to discover many tiny wonders in this city if you give it a chance. Countless quirky attractions are scattered across the Slovenian capital, and here are three you should discover while roaming its streets.

Dragon Bridge

Dragon Bridge is impossible to miss since it’s one of Ljubljana’s top attractions, but there’s still an aura of quirkiness around it. You don’t exactly get to see bridges decorated with dragon statues every day, and Ljubljana is one of the few cities in the world that offer this experience.

Metelkova Art Center

If you like alternative places with an edgy vibe, Metelkova is just the thing you need. This art center was built on the grounds of abandoned military barracks, and it now serves as the heart of Ljubljana’s alternative scene. Even if you don’t intend to attend a concert on its premises, you’ll enjoy checking out graffiti, folk art, tile mosaics, and weird sculptures that it’s covered with.

Cyanometer

Unless you know what this monolithic structure truly is, you’ll probably miss it while exploring the city center, but it’s worth stopping for. Cyanometer shows the quality of air by measuring the blueness of the sky, and it’s really amazing to watch it change colors throughout the day.

The first thing you’ll notice while strolling through Ljubljana’s city center are the many bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River. They’re all unique in their own right and have incredible backstories.

Dragon Bridge

Built at the turn of the 20th century, this Art Nouveau bridge is one of Ljubljana’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s decorated with sheet-copper dragon statues since there were many myths and legends throughout the history of the city concerning dragons.

Triple Bridge

Designed by the legendary Slovene architect Jože Plečnik, this structure consists of three bridges across the Ljubljanica River. They represent the connecting link between the historical, medieval part of the city with the more modern area on the other side of the river.

Cobblers’ Bridge

Also known as Shoemakers’ Bridge, this bridge once provided room for cobblers’ workshops and it’s another great example of Jože Plečnik’s architectural legacy.

Butchers’ Bridge

Also designed by Jože Plečnik, Butchers’ Bridge is connected to the Ljubljana Central Market, and it’s impossible to miss for more reasons than one. It’s home to several eye-catching sculptures of mythical and religious figures, and it’s the best place in Ljubljana to leave behind love padlocks with your significant other.

Ljubljana, Slovenia is often described as “the city of dragons”, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Dragon Bridge is one of its most recognizable symbols. There are many myths and legends surrounding this fairytale-like structure, and they will make you see it in a whole new light.

Jason and the Argonauts

If you’re a fan of Greek mythology, you’re already familiar with the Argonauts leader Jason, and his quest for the Golden Fleece. Legend has it he reached a large lake near Ljubljana after sailing across the Black Sea, where Jason fought and defeated the dragon.

St. George

Another myth, that’s much closer to Slovenian culture, has St. George killing the dragon with a spear. St. George also happens to be the patron saint of the castle chapel, which is a part of the Ljubljana Castle complex.

Slavic Mythology

In Slavic mythology, the god Veles – seen as the opponent of the supreme thunder god Perun – often takes a shape of a dragon. This god is usually worshiped lower in the city, near the marketplace, so it’s not a coincidence that Ljubljana’s main market is located only a few seconds away from the Dragon Bridge.

You may know a lot about these countries and the tourist destinations they offer, but more often than not, their capital cities are not on the list of places to visit. We are here to change your mind about the lovely capitals of Slovenia and Canada.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

The beautiful Ljubljana is the Paris of Eastern Europe. Here, the endless array of charming cafes, pastry shops, and restaurants located down the river Ljubljana and looking out over the castle of Ljubljana, which is a medieval masterpiece on the top of a hill, are only a few of the reasons why Ljubljana is breathtaking. The cobblestone streets, intriguing bridges, and outstanding architecture make this city look like a fairy tale.

Ottawa, Canada

Many people assume that Toronto is the capital of Canada, but the capital is actually Ottawa. Ottawa is one genuinely multicultural and cozy capital, with only 1 million inhabitants and some gorgeous must-visit locations.

The city is home to Canada’s Most Visited Museum of History, the parliament’s historic buildings and the bustling ByWard Market. In the winter, you should visit the Rido Canal, which turns into the largest natural skating rink in the world that is even used by locals to get to their jobs.

Museums of Illusions are all the rage in the Balkan region, and it’s taking the rest of the world by storm. You can now find branches everywhere from New York to Shanghai, but if you want to explore the origins of the immersive and interactive museums, here’s where you should start.

Zagreb, Croatia

First branch of this successful museum franchise opened in the Croatian capital back in 2015, before expending to the rest of the world. It quickly became one of Zagreb’s must-see spots, and everyone who entered its doors left with a bunch of amazing photos.

Belgrade, Serbia

It was just a matter of time before Belgrade got their own Museum of Illusions, and both locals and tourists were head over heels once that moment finally came. The majority of the visual tricks and immersive rooms present in Zagreb can be found here, as well.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

All of the signature illusions that make the museums in Zagreb and Belgrade true sensations can also be found in Ljubljana – including the head on a plate trick and the gravity-defying upside-down room.

Ljubljana is a majestic city located in Central Slovenia, wedged between the Alps. It’s also a stone’s throw away from Vienna, Munich, Budapest and more.

Ljubljanica’s architecture is reminiscent of the Roman period with its amber-brown rooftops glistening in the sun.

There’s no surprise that hip cafes would inhabit this cool city; here are a few of some of the best picks.

Tozd Cafe

Tozd has a chill atmosphere located beside the Ljubljanica river – we highly recommend the tapas. People have been raving about them! Start your day off here or even come in for lunch.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz2kGPAF1Oj/

Repete

Repete is your go-to place for delectable food, craft beers on tap and even jazz music. Sitting outside enjoying beer with friends sounds great on a hot day.

Central Station

Central Station is not your regular bar – because it’s way more than that. Imagine a place where you can bring 20 and even more friends and enjoy music that fits your mood. They have several events on their website too, so you can check out the latest DJs playing. How awesome is that?
