Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city in terms of population and third largest city in size, but it often gets overlooked as a tourist destination. Sydney brings in crowds looking to see its iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and nature-lovers flock to the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. Still, Melbourne has no shortage of attractions to offer travelers of all kinds. The city has its own rich culture, history, and some of the best coffee you’ll ever taste. Here are a few of our favorite things to do whenever we find ourselves in this part of the Land Down Under.

Royal Botanical Gardens

These stunning gardens cover 38 hectares of land across Melbourne and Cranbourne and are a must-see for those in the area. The property includes trees, gardens, lakes, and lawns year-round while other attractions such as light shows are put up seasonally.

Queen Victoria Market

Kill two birds with one stone by exploring this 140-year-old historic landmark as you simultaneously shop for food and souvenirs. The market is open five days a week and food tours are held biweekly.

National Gallery of Victoria

One of the best ways to get to know a city is through its art and this art museum in Melbourne does not disappoint. Entry to the museum is free, though special exhibitions may cost extra.

Queen Victoria Market is Melbourne’s timeless symbol and one of the attractions you shouldn’t miss for the world while in this city. It deserves a spot on your travel itinerary for more reasons than one, and here’s why a visit to this Australian metropolis is incomplete if you don’t check it out.

Shopping Hub

Queen Victoria Market is one of Melbourne’s biggest shopping hubs, and that’s the main reason why most people pay it a visit. It covers two city blocks filled with local foods, arts, and crafts, and it currently holds the record as the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere.

Rich History

Even if you leave Queen Victoria Market without buying anything, you’ll be wowed by its rich history. It opened its doors in 1878, and it managed to stand the test of time. It’s currently the only Victorian-era market in Melbourne that still hasn’t closed its doors.

Architectural Wonder

10 million people go through the doors of Vic Market every year because it’s impossible to resist its architectural beauty. This building is one of the best examples of 19th-century architecture in the entire country, and it’s one of Melbourne’s most important architectural wonders.

If the road ever takes you to Istanbul, a must-visit location is their Grand Bazaar. It gets this name for a reason. I’m talking about a huge market, which is also among the top three attractions in the world by the number of tourists.

The souks in Marrakesh are well known as the most exciting street markets in the world. Here you can bargain for deals all day long, and you still won’t be bored. In Jemaa el-Fnaa you’ll find the most beautiful rugs, spices, handmade decorations and much more.
