Riga is safely tucked away on the banks of the Daugava River so it goes without saying that it’s home to many beautiful bridges. If you ever find yourself in the capital of Latvia, make sure to check out these stunning bridges that add to the city’s architectural charm.

Vanšu Bridge

Vansu Bridge is one of the symbols of modern Riga, and it creates a truly captivating sight, especially at night when its illuminated lights reflect on the shimmering waters. The name of this cable-stayed bridge could refer to the cables suspending its deck, known as shrouds in English.

Stone Bridge

You’ll probably admire all the bridges in Riga from a distance, but this is one you should certainly cross. This bridge offers picturesque views of the river and the surrounding skyline, and it connects the Old Town with the National Library of Latvia.

Southern Bridge

This bridge connects Riga’s city center with the Pardaugava district, and it’s colloquially known as The Golden Bridge because it took a fortune to finish it in 2008.

Railway Bridge

The main railway bridge in Riga has been around for over a century, but it went through several reconstructions during that time. It’s now a notable sight along Riga’s riverfront and a significant contribution to its architectural diversity.

Riga is often hailed as the most beautiful of all the Baltic capitals, and it’s worth visiting for its architectural richness alone. If you ever find yourself in Latvia’s most stunning city, here are three beautiful buildings that you shouldn’t miss for the world.

House of the Black Heads

The main attraction of Riga’s Old Town, the House of the Blackheads is one of the most recognizable buildings in the Latvian capital. This Renaissance icon will win you over with its vibrant façade, adorned with ornate sculptures and intricate decorations that make it even more striking.

Riga Cathedral

This stunning Gothic church dominates the skyline of Riga, and it’s one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Latvia. It’s been standing tall for over eight centuries, and it went through many notable reconstructions in recent years that brought it back to its former glory.

Three Brothers

The Three Brothers complex now serves as the home to the Latvian Museum of Architecture, and it perfectly reflects the city’s architectural evolution over the years. This complex consists of three neighboring houses that represent three architectural styles that ruled over Riga during certain periods in history – Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.

We don’t know about you, but one of our favorite things to do when we travel is going to secondhand stores. It’s a great way to get a sense of the local culture and style, plus you get to take home a souvenir that you don’t have to feel guilty about, as it’s purchased ethically. So if you drop by Riga anytime soon, here are some secondhand stores to visit.

Otra Elpa

Translating to “second breath” or “second wind” in Latvian, Otra Elpa is full of secondhand clothes, plus many other things including toys, games, DVDs, books, CDs, and other electronics. There are many locations all around Riga, so it shouldn’t be hard to find one near you.

Humana

The largest network of secondhand shops in Riga, Humana sends all of its proceeds to charity, so you can really feel good about shopping there. Plus, they have discounts and promotions every two weeks, so if your timing is lucky, then you’ll be able to get some pretty good deals.

KiloMax

For the best secondhand prices in town, stop by KiloMax, which is a smooth-running operation that sells their clothes by weight rather than item. Plus, if you can’t make it in person, you can even shop at KiloMax online!

Latvia is a relatively small country, so you can take a day trip to pretty much anywhere from its capital of Riga. If you’re in the mood to explore some of its most beautiful castles and palaces, here’s a couple of places you should consider checking out.

Sigulda

Located only an hour from Riga, this picturesque town is home to several castles that will take your breath away, including Turaida Castle, Sigulda Castle, and the ruins of Krimulda Castle.

Cesis

If you’re already planning to visit Sigulda, make sure to add Cesis to your itinerary, as well. These charming towns are located in close proximity to each other, and Cēsis Castle is certainly worth the trip, since it’s one of Latvia’s best-preserved medieval castles.

Rundale

Rundale Palace served as a summer residence for the Dukes of Courland, who ruled over the Baltic region for several centuries, so it’s not surprising that it became one of Latvia’s major tourist destinations.

Jelgava

Jelgava Palace is the second palace built for the Dukes of Courland, and it’s also the largest baroque-style palace in the Baltic states.
