Latvia is a relatively small country, so you can take a day trip to pretty much anywhere from its capital of Riga. If you’re in the mood to explore some of its most beautiful castles and palaces, here’s a couple of places you should consider checking out.
Sigulda
Located only an hour from Riga, this picturesque town is home to several castles that will take your breath away, including Turaida Castle, Sigulda Castle, and the ruins of Krimulda Castle.
Cesis
If you’re already planning to visit Sigulda, make sure to add Cesis to your itinerary, as well. These charming towns are located in close proximity to each other, and Cēsis Castle is certainly worth the trip, since it’s one of Latvia’s best-preserved medieval castles.
Rundale
Rundale Palace served as a summer residence for the Dukes of Courland, who ruled over the Baltic region for several centuries, so it’s not surprising that it became one of Latvia’s major tourist destinations.
Jelgava
Jelgava Palace is the second palace built for the Dukes of Courland, and it’s also the largest baroque-style palace in the Baltic states.
