Safaris aren’t the only way to get up close and personal with nature in Africa—If you’re in search of an unforgettable adventure, consider heading to Rwanda to track Silverback Gorillas. Not only is it a unique experience, but it’s also an opportunity to see the world’s largest living primates in their natural habitat.

Africa is home to about 1,000 mountain gorillas, about one-third of which are currently in Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda. The gorillas live together in twelve groups known as families throughout the park and are monitored and protected by local rangers.

On the day of your track, you’ll embark on a hike through the rainforest alongside experienced trackers who will lead you to the gorillas’ location. Expect the hike to take 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the location of the family your group will visit. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll have an hour to observe the gorillas in their natural habitat.

For an extra adorable experience, consider planning your trip during Kwita Izina, an annual naming ceremony to celebrate the birth of the country’s newborn baby gorillas. Visitors looking to plan a track can book a permit online or with a tour guide in advance.

If you can’t stay for long in Kigali, Rwanda, we first have to say we’re sorry because you will probably miss out on some amazing stuff. Secondly, even if your visit to this vibrant city is short, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look to make the most of it. One way to do it is by checking out the following tourist attractions.

If you are keen on exploring Africa as a tourist, one of your first stops should be Rwanda. Here you’ll have the opportunity to see Mountain Gorillas in person, enjoy some scenic views, and explore a unique culture. However, before visiting Rwanda, there are some things you should know.

English is the Official Language

You shouldn’t have issues interacting with locals in bigger cities. English is the country’s official language and has been so since 1994. However, keep in mind that in some parts of the country, French or national Kinyarwanda is still predominantly spoken.

Visitors Receive a Visa on Arrival

Rwanda requires all foreign visitors to get visas before entering the country. However, the good news is that the visa is issued on arrival at Kigali International Airport and land borders. A single entry tourist visa costs $50 and is valid for 30 days.

Rwanda is a Cash-Based Economy

Rwanda still relies on cash when it comes to paying for the majority of services and goods. The ATMs are not easily available, especially outside the capital Kigali, while many stores and restaurants only take cash. The official currency is the Rwandan franc, although the US dollar is widely accepted.

Safety Won’t Be an Issue

Despite having a tragic and violent past, Rwanda is nowadays a peaceful country. Safety is not an issue as the level of crime is relatively low in the country. However, keep general precautions as petty theft can still happen.

Rwanda might have been overlooked by tourists in the past, but that certainly isn’t the case anymore. Tourism has been rapidly growing in this Eastern African country in recent years, and rightfully so. Rwanda’s natural beauty is breathtaking, while the country’s diverse culture and the hospitality of the locals will blow you away.

If this isn’t enough to convince you to consider visiting this captivating country, maybe these top three things to do as a tourist in Rwanda will seal the deal. Check them out below.

National Parks

Rwanda has four national parks, and each one is well worth your time. For example, the Volcanoes National Park is the place where you can take part in mountain gorilla safaris. In addition, the Nyungwe Forest National Park houses 1,068 plant species and 322 different bird species, while the Akagera National Park offers a chance to see elephants, lions, leopards, and many other fascinating animals. Finally, the Gishwati-Mukura Forest National Park is popular for bird watching and hiking.

Music and Dance Performances

Music and dance are deeply rooted in Rwandan culture. So you won’t have to search too hard to find some kind of entertaining performance wherever you are in the country. The most common ones usually include intore, Rwanda’s highly-choreographed traditional dance.

Museums and Art Centers

This remarkable country has a turbulent history that you should definitely learn more about in order to fully appreciate your stay. This can be done in one of Rwanda’s many museums, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial and King’s Palace Museum. After that, you can learn more about the art in the country by visiting Rwanda Art Museum or Inema Arts Center.
