]]>The term “selfie” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. It was defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”
Selfies are a common feature on vacation, especially when it comes to traveling solo; but a small town in Austria is putting a stop to the iconic snapshot.
One of the main draw cards of Hallstatt is its magnificent mountain range which is believed to have inspired the Disney film Frozen.
Naturally, tourists want to take a picture of themselves with the stunning backdrop, but the town’s mayor is encouraging them to let it go.
Stating that there are actually people who live in the area, Mayor Alexander Scheutz implemented a fence to prevent noisy tourists from hovering in the spot and taking photos of the view.
Although it has since been removed—following backlash on social media—Scheutz says he still wants to install a banner reminding visitors that the people of Hallstatt just want to be left in peace.
