With practically every moment of our lives being documented on social media, the question stands: were you even there if you didn’t take a selfie?!

The term “selfie” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. It was defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”

Selfies are a common feature on vacation, especially when it comes to traveling solo; but a small town in Austria is putting a stop to the iconic snapshot.

One of the main draw cards of Hallstatt is its magnificent mountain range which is believed to have inspired the Disney film Frozen.

Naturally, tourists want to take a picture of themselves with the stunning backdrop, but the town’s mayor is encouraging them to let it go.

Stating that there are actually people who live in the area, Mayor Alexander Scheutz implemented a fence to prevent noisy tourists from hovering in the spot and taking photos of the view.

Although it has since been removed—following backlash on social media—Scheutz says he still wants to install a banner reminding visitors that the people of Hallstatt just want to be left in peace.

The selfie stick: an invention that came out of 2005 with a vengeance, leaving everybody with a strong opinion about it. Seemingly simple, creating a stick that you can use to take photos of yourself turned out to be actually quite revolutionary, and within what felt like minutes, everybody suddenly seemed to have one.

But whether or not you had a selfie stick, you certainly had some pretty stubborn thoughts about selfie sticks. Either you decided that it was an incredibly helpful tool to use while traveling to get photos of you and your travel buddy, or you thought it was embarrassing and gauche, looking down on the people who used them.

Maybe you wanted to try a selfie stick but, because of all of that judgment, never bothered to buy one, thinking it would be embarrassing to be seen with one in public. Well, we’re here to break that stigma. Because selfies sticks are actually incredibly useful.

After all, don’t you want to have nice photos of yourself on vacation that are actually taken at enough of a distance that you can see all of the beautiful sights in the background? Yeah, us too. And that’s why we flaunt our selfie sticks proudly.

Because when you’re older and looking back on the photo albums of your travel adventures, you won’t remember if somebody around you looked you funny for using a selfie stick. But you will remember all of those amazing memories you were able to capture because you had one.

You’ve decided to travel by yourself but you are worried that the only photos that appear on your camera will be of buildings, landscapes, food, and none of your face. Well, no worries, because these are the best ways to take a photo of yourself while traveling solo.

Self-timer

It is the easiest way to capture a pic of yourself. All you need is a flat surface to put your camera or phone. But if you want to bring your pictures to the next level, invest in a tripod. The most suitable tripod for travelers is the lightweight and compact gorilla tripod.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhCdysQlqLb/?tagged=selftimerselfie

Burst mode

Burst mode allows you to take up to 20 photos with a single tap on the shutter button. Ready, steady, go! Let the best picture find its way to Instagram!

Random body parts

You don’t need your whole body in the photo to prove that you were there. Take a snap of your feet, hand, half face, etc.

Video screenshot

Record a video of yourself, pause it and take a screenshot. Warning: These photos might not be the sharpest and the most high-quality ones you ever had, but no worries, filters are here to save the day! Or in this case, your photographs.

Friendly strangers

If you aren’t satisfied with the photos that you took by yourself, you can always use the good old “Ask a stranger” method.
