The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most amazing sights in the world. It’s estimated to be older than 4,500 years and it’s one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—and the only one that still stands today. There are plenty of stories and myths that surround it, and here are some of the most interesting facts.

The Great Pyramid

The largest and oldest pyramid in Giza, Egypt is called the Great Pyramid or the Pyramid of Khufu. It got its name from the ancient Egyptian monarch Khufu, who was the first to build a pyramid in Giza around 2550 B.C. It was the tallest structure made by man for a long time, until the 14th century.

Three Pyramids

There are three pyramids at Giza. The second largest one was built by Khufu’s son, Pharaoh Kharfe. The third one was built by Pharaoh Menkaure. The complex where they are located also includes the Great Sphinx of Giza, a palace, and several temples.

Location Was Strategic

The pyramids are located on the West side of the Nile, which the Egyptians believed was for the dead. The East side of the river, where the sun rises, is for the living.

If you still haven’t seen it, below is the amazing 3-D documentary by BBC that shows the inside of the Great Pyramid of Giza. The incredible pyramid is the only Wonder of the Ancient World you can still see and that makes it a popular place for tourists. However, traveling to Egypt will only allow it to see it from the outside. The BBC’s 360° video gives you an opportunity to take a virtual walk through its many rooms and paths.

“Travel to the heart of the Great Pyramid of Giza – the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World,” the video description reads. “Built over four and a half thousand years ago, the pyramid is the tomb of the Pharaoh Khufu. You can pass through the solid stone blocks that make up the Pyramid’s core to explore its hidden passages and chambers.”

Click play below to watch an exciting video of the pyramid’s inside – it’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. The video may inspire you to go and see the pyramids in Egypt in person if you’ve never done that. They’re one of the most visited places in the world for a good reason, so go and see them as soon as you get the chance!

We’ve all seen those lists of places we simply must visit before we die, but there are actually some popular tourist spots that one should really avoid.

London Bridge

Arguably the most famous bridge in the world, London Bridge is nearly 1,000 years old. But most of us have got it wrong because the bridge pictured is actually Tower Bridge.

The real London Bridge is completely unimpressive, so if you find yourself there, walk along the river either left or right to find a really impressive bridge to gaze upon.

The Great Pyramid at Giza

The last remaining Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid at Giza is actually so overrun with tourists that visiting is bound to leave you disappointed because of the crowds and its proximity to KFC and Pizza Hut.

The Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa is probably the world’s most famous painting. Painted by the brilliant Leonard da Vinci in the early 16th Century, viewing the Mona Lisa can be very disappointing because the painting is tiny.

It’s also difficult to see because the lighting is poor, so you’re better off looking at a reproduction than at the real thing.
