Paris has served as a source of inspiration for writers for centuries. Whether it’s the city’s rich history, unique culture, or renowned cuisine, we can’t say, but whatever it is has captivated writers and led them to make Paris the backdrop for countless novels and memoirs. Here are some of our favorite books that will have you feeling like you’re at a cafe in the middle of the City of Light—we recommend enjoying with some hot chocolate and a croissant.

The Little Paris Bookshop

This novel by Nina George follows a broken-hearted bookseller as he embarks on a journey to find the literary soulmate he lost decades before. More than just a beautiful setting, the story shares a message about books and their power to help us heal.

The Sweet Life in Paris

Cookbook author and pastry chef David Lebovitz shares insights and observations in this funny and charming memoir about his experience moving to Paris, learning the ins and outs of French culture and cooking French cuisine. Don’t read this one while hungry.

The Paris Wife

Fans of historical fiction are sure to love The Paris Wife, a novel by Paula McLain about Ernest Hemingway’s first marriage to Hadley Richardson. The story is written from Hadley’s perspective and explores their relationship as they move to Paris and befriend other artists and writers of the time.

If you’re looking to get off your couch and into the wilderness, but can’t seem to pull the trigger, we may have a solution for you. The following three books tell tales of heart and adventure, and they may just inspire you to trust in yourself and go traveling!

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

One of the most popular books of all time, The Alchemist follows a young shepherd’s journey from Spain to Egypt. He does this in such an earnest way that you won’t be able to resist getting inspired by his journey. Perhaps this quote from the book sums it up best: “If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man.”

On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Set in the Beat Generation, this is about as classic a travel book as you can find. Jack Kerouac tells the story of Sal as he leaves New York City and travels west, discovering all kinds of new adventures in the process. More than anything, he learns a lot about his own strength and confidence.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

This isn’t usually the first book people jump to when they think about traveling the world in the modern sense. That’s because The Hobbit is set in the fictional world of Middle Earth, so perhaps there isn’t much commonality there. But as far as inspiring one to have an adventure, The Hobbit is one of the best books you can find. Given that the protagonist is an innocent halfling who gets yanked out of his comfy life to go aid a group of dwarves on a perilous quest with mountains, goblins, and dragons—this certainly fits the bill.

One of the best books to read on a trip is The Life of Pi by Jan Martel. Many travelers cling to their copy and find it difficult to let it go even at the end of the trip.

The book tells the fascinating story of five survivors of a sunken ship—an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena, a Bengali tiger, and Pi Patel, a 16-year-old Indian boy—huddled together in a small lifeboat.

Life on a lifeboat isn’t much of a life. It is like an end game in chess, a game with few pieces. The elements couldn’t be more simple, nor the stakes higher—- Piscine Molitor Patel 🛶 Life of Pi is a story about a boy who was named after the French word for swimming pool Piscine. Pi's character seems interesting when he seems interested in practicing 3 religions at the same time. And how due to the political issues in India, they were forced to board Tsimtsum and move to Canada. Part two shows Pi's struggles and hardships he faces and it covers most of the book. Part three, when two officials hear about Pi being the only survivor and interview him even though they find it hard to believe that he survived that long with a tiger as a companion.  🛶 The language used is quite simple and very easily understandable. It really teaches lessons about how you should never give up. It is a really well written book but it seemed to get a little boring over as I progressed towards the end of part two and I had lost interest in the book. Even so, this book is still an amazing piece of work. It's like the writing shows the author's passion for his work.  🛶 My most favourite quote from this book was "Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can."  🛶 #QOTD: which is the book that's been on your TBR for a long time?  #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #reading #bookstagrammer #bookish #booknerd #bookaddict #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #bookaholic #lifeofpi #readersofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #booklove #bookshelf #indianbookstagrammer #bookcommunity #booklovers #bookreview #reader #goodreads #yannmartel #bookreview #abookbyherside

If you’re a huge bookworm and can’t imagine a day without reading, chances are you bring a book or two everywhere you go. Finding enough room for books in a tiny suitcase can be tricky, and here’s what you should consider before packing them for your next trip.

Realistic Goals

Set realistic reading goals so you wouldn’t end up packing more books than you need. If you’re spending most of your time relaxing at the beach or a hotel room, you’ll have a lot of time for reading at your disposal. If you’re sightseeing and visiting museums all day long, chances are you’ll be pretty tired by the end of the day.

Long Commute

If your trip includes long rides by bus or train, packing more books than you usually do is a good idea, since they come in handy when you want to pass the time.

Saving Space

The longer your trip is, the more books you’ll need, but you’re probably going to bring a bigger suitcase. Figure out how many books you can read during this time, and don’t pack any more than necessary since they’re heavy and take up too much space. If you don’t have enough room for physical copies, ebooks and audiobooks are a great alternative.
