The northern lights are a mesmerizing phenomenon that millions of people from around the globe travel to witness every year, typically in Nordic countries such as Finland and Iceland. True to their name, the lights are easiest to spot in more northern locations, but once in a while, the stars align and aurora borealis makes an appearance as far south as the United States. Here are a few locations where you’re most likely to catch them.

Upper Peninsula, Michigan

Along the Great Lakes, the expansive skies of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula make it one of the best places to see the northern lights in the entire US. Although the Upper Peninsula covers almost one-third of the state, it only contains about 3% of the total population, meaning the region has next to no light pollution to obscure celestial activity. The further north you go, the more frequently the lights appear, though October through April is considered peak season.

Aroostook County, Maine

Moving east, Maine’s northernmost county also happens to be one of its least densely populated, providing the necessary clear conditions for successful stargazing. During winter, pitch-black skies over all 3.5 million acres of Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge provide a perfect blank canvas for the ethereal colors of aurora borealis.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Where else to observe the beauty of aurora borealis than Big Sky Country? Montana’s geographical position and dark winter skies allow the northern lights to make occasional appearances in the northern regions of the state. Glacier National Park, in particular, offers clear views of the lights as they dance over the mountains.

If you’re looking for a way to explore the United States that’s both exhilarating and scenic, you can’t go wrong with a classic American road trip. From coast to coast, the US is home to some of the most breathtaking views in the world, and there’s no better way to take it all in than from behind the wheel of your own car. The Pacific Coast Highway

Stretching over 600 miles from California’s Big Sur to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, this route offers picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline. Along your journey, be sure to check out iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, or take a pit stop at one of Napa Valley’s world-class wineries.

Route 66

No list of American road trips would be complete without Route 66, the legendary highway stretching over 2,000 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica. More than anything, Route 66 is known for its quirky roadside attractions and nostalgic Americana. Drive through ghost towns, see classic diners and motels, and take in the desert landscapes of the American Southwest.

It seems that during the holidays, more than at any other time of the year, people enjoy baking. Maybe it’s because we crave carbs when the weather is cold, or because we feel like we need something to offer guests with their coffee, but whatever the reason, people turned to Google to find their cookie of choice.

In its latest trend report, Google has revealed what was the most searched-for cookies in each US state between December 3 and 9. The map released by the search engine is based on “uniquely searched cookies” which means that a state searched for it more than the US as a whole.

Gingerbread and peanut butter cookies proved the most popular in 7 states each. These included Oregon and South Carolina for gingerbread cookies, which encompass our favorite Christmas spices; while Pennsylvania and Ohio were on Team Peanut Butter.

Italian Christmas cookies were the most sought-after in New York and New Jersey was hardly a surprise considering their large Italian communities. As for traditional Christmas sugar cookies? Idaho and Alaska wanted some of those.

The international treats did not stop with Italy, though. German, Mexican, and Polish cookies also featured amongst America’s searches, highlighting how food really is the global language!

Here is the full list:

As much as we want to look put together while traveling, it can be tricky to find pieces that can stand up to the journey of being dragged through airports and toted around cities and still look chic in the process. With bags, in particular, we’ve often found that we need to choose between ones that suit our taste and ones that are actually capable of holding all of our possessions as we spend time walking around and exploring.

Fortunately, though, the days of having to choose between style and function are behind us. We love to use backpacks when we travel, and we’ve found a few that suit all of our practical needs without compromising on style in the process.

Everlane Renew Transit Backpack

This bag checks all of our boxes when it comes to what we’re looking for in a travel backpack. It’s comfortable, waterproof, and has 7 pockets, so it’s big enough to carry everything we need for a flight. We also love that it’s made with recycled materials, making it an eco-friendly option.

Herschel Retreat Backpack

Herschel is our favorite brand for bags when we’re looking for something classic and durable, and their retreat bags are no exception. They’re made in several different sizes, so you can choose the one that best suits how much space you need during travel. Some of the color options are also made with recycled materials.

Lululemon City Adventure Backpack

What we love most about this backpack (aside from how comfortable it is) is its versatility. It has plenty of pockets to help keep you organized and even a separate compartment for dirty clothes, which is helpful at the gym but can also come in handy for travel.

Colorado is absolutely chock-full of amazing places to hike, camp, rock climb, and other adventure sports. Whether you visit for business or pleasure, finding time for at least a couple of hikes will greatly enhance your trip. It’s hard to choose just a few trails because they are countless all over the state, but here are three of the best to check out.

Royal Arch

Located at the century-old Chautauqua nature and culture center, the Royal Arch is a popular hiking destination among locals and tourists alike. The natural arched rock formation is found at the top of several different trails, where you can see amazing views of the Flatirons. Be sure to look at a map of the trails and plan your route up from the Chautauqua Trailhead.

Ouray Perimeter Trail

With amazing views of the town of Ouray’s amazing pastoral environment, this trail is great for both longer and shorter hikes: since it’s a loop around town it’s possible to just hike smaller sections of the trail rather than going all the way around. This one features many awesome natural phenomena such as natural pools, caves, and waterfalls.

Rattlesnake Canyon

If you love desert views and getting away from society, then this is a great place to start. You’ll need to drive off-road or hike over from another trail just to reach this hiking area, which features sandstone-layered rock and the red-orange marvel of pure desert.

Las Vegas is a paradise for anyone who’s into creative and fun travel photos. From the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada” sign to many old and new spots that look like their only purpose is to be photographed, you won’t know where to go first. Here are three of our favorites.

The Neon Museum

Without a doubt, this is one of the most beautiful places in Las Vegas. It holds restored old signs from all around the city, such as hotels, restaurants, bars, and more. Make sure to stop by at dusk if you want the most magnificent photos.

The Plaza Hotel

The Plaza Hotel’s doorway is stunning enough, but if you head inside you’ll find one of the most fabulous dining rooms in Las Vegas with a wonderful view of the Fremont Street Experience. Take a lot of pictures here!

Abbey Road Crossing

You don’t have to go to London to take a photo on Abbey Road Crossing, there’s a colorful replica in Vegas! Most people don’t know about it and just go past it, but it’s a beautiful spot for taking pictures. It’s lit by the neon lights of the El Cortez and looks the most beautiful when it’s dark outside.

If you’re looking for a way to explore the United States that’s both exhilarating and scenic, you can’t go wrong with a classic American road trip. From coast to coast, the US is home to some of the most breathtaking views in the world, and there’s no better way to take it all in than from behind the wheel of your own car. Whether you’re looking to experience the natural beauty of national parks, or soak up the culture of small towns, there’s a road trip out there that’s perfect for you. Grab your best travel buddy and a map and read on to learn more about some of the best road trips in the US.

Lincoln Highway

Lincoln Highway is the oldest highway for automobiles that spans the entire continental United States. It starts in Times Square, NYC and passes through over 700 small towns before coming to an end in San Francisco’s Lincoln Park (or vice versa, depending on which direction you’re headed.) With such a long journey comes countless opportunities to stop and explore, though some notable pit stops include the Lincoln Monument in Illinois and the National Automobile Museum in Nevada.
