]]>As much as possible, try to schedule leisure activities within your free time. Keep work commitments limited to typical business hours, using evenings and weekends as an opportunity to relax and explore. Check out local attractions, go out to eat, and attend cultural events to experience the unique features of your destination. With this approach, you’ll be able to get more out of your trip and return home with both professional achievements and personal memories.
If you have the option to choose your own accommodations, opt for a place with a relaxing atmosphere. Look for hotels or Airbnb’s that come with amenities such as a pool, spa, or fitness center where you can unwind in your free time, and consider extending your stay for a day or two post-business to enjoy your destination without the constraints of work.
One of the best ways to make any trip feel like a vacation is to create a sense of connection with the local culture. Venture beyond the business district to parks and markets in off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, and consider taking a guided walking tour if your schedule allows. Ask your host or hotel concierge for recommendations.

]]>When you’re exhausted from a full day of walking and new sights, it’s hard to actually enjoy all the new stuff you’re seeing or to absorb the new information you’re learning. And what’s the point, really, of visiting a new place if you’re barely experiencing it? Blocking out some time to sit at a cafe or take a nap at your hotel will help you be as rested as you need to be to really enjoy your trip.
Another symptom of exhaustion is fast burnout. If you plan your first couple of days chock-full of activities, you’ll likely feel burnt out by the third or fourth day and may not even feel like going anywhere. Instead of risking losing a full day, choose just a couple of things you want to see each day and plan for downtime in between to keep your energy levels up the whole trip.
Downtime doesn’t always have to mean a nap, it can also mean sitting at a cafe, beach, or park. If you can find out how locals like to relax or where they like to go to blow off steam, you can get a taste of local culture by resting the same way they do.

Chances are you’re a bit rusty when it comes to packing, so don’t fall into the old trap of packing too much. Before you put things into your suitcase, make a list of everything you want to pack, which should include clothing, beauty products, documents, electronics, and chargers.
