For those of us who love to travel, having the opportunity to jetset through work may feel like an absolute dream come true. The reality is, however, that while traveling on someone else’s dime may sound nice in theory, most work trips include much more business than pleasure. After all, we can’t exactly host conferences by the pool, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have some fun. Read on for some tips on how to make your next business trip feel more like a vacation.

Balance Your Itinerary

As much as possible, try to schedule leisure activities within your free time. Keep work commitments limited to typical business hours, using evenings and weekends as an opportunity to relax and explore. Check out local attractions, go out to eat, and attend cultural events to experience the unique features of your destination. With this approach, you’ll be able to get more out of your trip and return home with both professional achievements and personal memories.

Consider Your Accommodations

If you have the option to choose your own accommodations, opt for a place with a relaxing atmosphere. Look for hotels or Airbnb’s that come with amenities such as a pool, spa, or fitness center where you can unwind in your free time, and consider extending your stay for a day or two post-business to enjoy your destination without the constraints of work.

Connect With Local Culture

One of the best ways to make any trip feel like a vacation is to create a sense of connection with the local culture. Venture beyond the business district to parks and markets in off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, and consider taking a guided walking tour if your schedule allows. Ask your host or hotel concierge for recommendations.

It’s never too early to start thinking about your next family vacation. In fact, now is the perfect time, according to data from Airbnb.

The rental company compiled a report based on its financial findings from the fourth quarter of 2022 to highlight that families save more when booking on the platform.

“Families can get an Airbnb with two bedrooms and two bathrooms for approximately the price of one hotel room at a major chain,” the report stated. It also claimed that more than half of families stayed between two and six nights, while nearly half stayed for a week or longer.

“Family travel is booming on Airbnb. Globally, family travel on our platform is up 60 percent in 2022 compared to before the pandemic in 2019, with over 15 million check-ins in nearly 90,000 destinations. Many of those families likely booked Airbnb listings because of the value and space they received compared to what hotel rooms offer.”

The report noted that fall and winter are the most affordable times for families to book their vacations. Reservations during October, November, and December all averaged less than $50 per person, per night, globally, according to the data.

And if you’re going on vacation to rest, you might want to consider an Airbnb. A survey by the Sleep Foundation found that 66.9% of travelers saying they got at least 7 hours of shut eye in a vacation rental, compared to 53.8% in a hotel or motel.

The travel operator focused on a variety of factors in each city, such as—the crime rate, the amount of pollution, the cost of beer, the number of activities, day trips, and wellness centers, and LGBTQ+ friendliness.

Coming in top position was Bali. The Indonesian island maintained its reputation as a great place to relax, thanks to its multitude of spas and fantastic outdoor activities. And surely the key to happiness is being stress-free?

Las Vegas was ranked second due to boasting over 40 outdoor activities, making it the ideal spot if you’re in search of adventure. Sin City is also famous for a variety of entertainment, ranging from live shows to casinos, and ranked highly in terms of safety.

If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, you should consider heading to New Orleans and Barcelona. Both cities scored the maximum in LGBTQ+ friendliness, earning them third and fourth place, respectively.

Amsterdam rounded out the Top 5 with the highest safety score, allowing visitors to feel comfortable as they explore all the city has to offer. However, the Dutch capital was found to charge the most for beer!

When you’re in a new place, it’s natural to want to spend every waking moment seeing something new. We only have a limited time on our vacations, and sometimes that can make us feel pressured to see and experience absolutely everything we can fit into that time frame. But that’s not always the best way to experience a new place. Here are some reasons planning for downtime is just as important as planning your sightseeing.

Better Frame of Mind

When you’re exhausted from a full day of walking and new sights, it’s hard to actually enjoy all the new stuff you’re seeing or to absorb the new information you’re learning. And what’s the point, really, of visiting a new place if you’re barely experiencing it? Blocking out some time to sit at a cafe or take a nap at your hotel will help you be as rested as you need to be to really enjoy your trip.

No Burnout

Another symptom of exhaustion is fast burnout. If you plan your first couple of days chock-full of activities, you’ll likely feel burnt out by the third or fourth day and may not even feel like going anywhere. Instead of risking losing a full day, choose just a couple of things you want to see each day and plan for downtime in between to keep your energy levels up the whole trip.

Local Culture

Downtime doesn’t always have to mean a nap, it can also mean sitting at a cafe, beach, or park. If you can find out how locals like to relax or where they like to go to blow off steam, you can get a taste of local culture by resting the same way they do.

If there’s one thing we’ve missed more than just about anything else this year it’s traveling. With all of the restrictions and borders closed, we weren’t able to go abroad over the past year and our travel bug is itching. But now that things are opening up again, it’s time to take that much-needed vacation. If you’re anything like us, you may be a bit nervous about traveling since it’s been a while since you’ve done it. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered on how to effortlessly return to traveling.

Masks are Required

Masks are mandatory for everyone at the airport and on the plane—it doesn’t matter if you’re vaccinated or not. Additionally, some countries still require masks, so make sure you pack a bunch with you and you have ones that are comfortable to wear for hours on a long flight.

Prioritize Sleep

Keeping to a sleep schedule is hard when you’re traveling, but it can help you make the most of your time away from home and it can prevent you from getting sick. The last thing you want to deal with on your vacation is being jet-lagged or sleep-deprived.

Pack Mindfully

Chances are you’re a bit rusty when it comes to packing, so don’t fall into the old trap of packing too much. Before you put things into your suitcase, make a list of everything you want to pack, which should include clothing, beauty products, documents, electronics, and chargers.
