When most people hear about the German region of Bavaria, they think of Oktoberfest, the big folk festival famous for drinking beer. Did you know that Bavaria also has a famous wine region? Franconia (Franken in German) is a region located in northwest Bavaria and the only wine region in this state.

It’s home to many prized quality wines and a famous “bocksbeutel” bottle. The wine from this region is known for fruity and dry, and the white wines made here are some of the best in the world. Besides the taste, visiting this region offers a lot of amazing experiences: wine tasting at cozy wine cellars and wine festivals are just some of them.

“There are thousand years of winemaking tradition in Franconia,” Joost von Nagell, the sommelier and head of restaurants, conferences, and catering for Munich Airport tells Matador Network. “The soil—the so-called Triassic soils of Keuper, Muschelkalk and Buntsandstein—allows Franconian grapevines to grow in the best conditions.”

Have you tried any of the Bavarian wines yet? Don’t forget to visit this amazing wine region the next time you’re in Germany! If you don’t have time to visit Franconia during your stay in Munchen, you can taste the wines in the city too!

In Italy’s southern Salento region, recognizable as the heel of the country’s boot shape, a couple of special grapes grow that make exquisite wines. One is called Negroamaro, and it is a dark-skinned grape from which dark, tannic, berry-like wine is created. This wine is valuable and delicious and is much more expensive and rare outside of Italy. Here is why you should try ordering it if you are ever in Italy.

Ancient Roots

The Negroamaro grape is native to the Salento region and has been grown there for over a thousand years. You can find wines today that are grown from vineyards that are nearly a hundred years old. This means the grapes are authentic and the wine that comes from them is wholly unique.

Climate

There are a couple of other vineyards that grow these grapes in other parts of the world including California and Australia, but none are as successful or as old as in Salento. The grape flourishes in the arid heat of the Southern Puglia region, needing little water and surviving year after year.

The Name

The name “Negroamaro” is thought to come from the wine’s color and taste. “Negro,” meaning black, refers to the grape’s very dark color. “Amaro”, meaning bitter, comes from its special bitter, tannic flavor hinted with spices and berries.

It makes sense you have to pay a bit more to get good wine, but what kind of wine has a price tag of $40,000 per bottle? The “world’s most expensive wine”—as it was called when it was launched—was produced in Hungary by winemakers Royal Tokaji. They only made 20 bottles of limited edition Essencia 2008 and 11 of them have been sold so far.

The 1.5-liter bottles were designed by Hungarian artist James Carcass. Each bottle comes in a lacquered black box. There’s also a switch that lights up the bottle. Each bottle is hand-blown, which means there are no two identical ones.

So, what makes this wine so special and deserving of its price tag? The Tokaji region is famous for its sweet wines, and only the best grapes of the aszú kind are used for making Essencia. While Essencia wine is always impressive, 2008 was a particularly good year.

To make Essencia, the winemakers use 1 kilogram (2 pounds) of perfectly ripe aszú grapes to make just s teaspoon of wine. The fermenting process is pretty straightforward, but the winemaker decides when it’s done and the wine is ready.

Make sure to visit the Tokaji region if you have a chance!

During the 16th century, many farmers in Tuscany started to grow grapes and produce wine. However, at the time, selling the wine was much more difficult than today for three main reasons: first, the land where the grapes were growing didn’t belong to the farmers but rather to the rich landlords who taxed the wine selling. Moreover, a set of regulations were installed that burdened the farmer and made the selling of wine not economical. A third reason was that epidemics were quite common at the time, making the selling dangerous for the winemakers.

The solution the local winemakers found was absolutely brilliant. They have created a small hole in the wall from which they can sell the wine while protecting their identity and limiting contact with the buyers.

Today there are around 267 “wine windows” in Tuscany, most of them in the city of Florence. These became once again popular lately with the spread of Covid-19. The restaurants in Florence were forced to close during the pandemic, but the 16th century solution was proved useful once again, allowing the wine sellers to continue running their business.
