During the summer months, mainland Europe can get stifling. Whilst many Europeans head to the beach, sometimes this isn’t an option. The next best thing? Outdoors swimming in the city. It’s fun, safe, sociable, and a great way to cool off in that heat. Be aware that not all European rivers are suitable for swimming in, here are three of the safest and best.

Eisbach, English Gardens, Munich

This small, man-made river is perfect for dipping into on a sweltering summer’s day. There is a section used by surfers, but it is fairly treacherous so you may prefer to just watch. Further down, the river becomes a fast-flowing brook, and you can swim or float along in its current as you watch the beautiful parkland glide past you. There are plenty of beer halls and cafes within the park, so you can also grab some refreshments.

Aare, Bern

The famous ‘Aare loop’ flows around the old city of Bern, and you can traverse it by dinghy, rowboat, or by swimming. This beautiful river then flows into Lake Biel, where you can take passenger boats to further explore the water. Do be aware that this river can get quite busy, it may be better to arrive earlier in the day.

Badeschiff, Berlin

If you don’t fancy plunging straight into a river, try this harborside pool in Berlin. Promising safe access to the water, you will get stunning views of the city from the pool. Do be aware that swimming is only possible with pre-booked tickets, and in the summer months these sell out fast.

Swimming in cities is a new way to experience them—just make sure to check that the area you are swimming in is safe, and follow what the locals do, and you’re sure to have a great time.
