So much of travel prep involves pondering what to pack—but what about what not to pack? Do you really need all those pairs of shoes? A second evening dress? Save some space in your suitcase by leaving these three items behind.

Bags

If there is one thing that social media has ruined about vacations, it is the convenience of repeating outfits. With your Instagram followers now having insight into your every move, wearing the same thing twice is viewed as a massive faux pas! As if trying to assemble a new outfit every day wasn’t bad enough, each ensemble requires a complimentary bag to complete the look. Sigh. Although matching bags may be chic, leave the collection at home. Instagram will forgive you.

Books

Vacation is the time when you’ll finally manage to work your way through your reading list. Right? While the plan is great in theory, the practicality of it, not so much. The odds of getting through more than one book are slim, and they can also add a lot of weight. Pack the one you really want to read—or better yet, download the books onto an electronic device.

Irreplaceable Items

The sad truth about traveling is that sometimes things get lost. Never pack anything that you would be devastated to lose, like those family heirloom earrings or your favorite vintage jacket. It’s not worth the risk.
