The Search For The Perfect Malasada

Portugal is known for many things—beautiful beaches, delicious wine, and of course amazing soccer teams. However, there is one very special pastry called a Malasada that no trip to this lovely country is complete without sampling.

Malasada is a simple Portuguese pastry made from a dough combined with yeast, deep fried to perfection, and then rolled in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. The best malasadas are the ones that have also been filled with a custard or jam. Not all malasadas are made the same way though, and certain bakeries have risen to prominence for having the best ones. If you find yourself traveling around Portugal, be sure to try one of these famous bakeries’ malasadas.

Pastéis de Belém — Lisbon

This little bakery is known for having some scrumptious malasadas, along with some other confections like custard tarts and parfaits. Sip on an espresso, and gaze out at the park in front of the cafe.

Confeitaria — Funchal

Another lovely bakery full of desserts, and malasadas is Confeitaria found in Funchal. If you have a real sweet tooth, then you may want to try a slice of one of the pies or assorted cheesecakes after eating your malasada.

Some of the best malasadas are also found at simple food stalls along the waterfront, so follow your nose and you will find one in no time.
