Things to do in Baku, Azerbaijan

It may not be the most obvious destination to consider when coming up with travel plans, but the capital of Azerbaijan is actually quite a beautiful city with plenty to offer almost any type of tourist. Often referred to as the “Paris of the East,” Baku is rich in history and culture and has some of the best art and architecture in the region. It’s also quite an affordable city, making it a great choice for those looking for a foreign location to visit on a budget. Here are some of the local sites and attractions we most recommend.

Heydar Aliyev Center

Named for one of the country’s former presidents, the Heydar Aliyev center is the most important cultural hub in Azerbaijan. Inside you’ll find a museum and several exhibition halls featuring the works of some of the world’s greatest artists.

Visit the Old City

Baku’s old city is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to several historical monuments including the 15th century Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the 12th century Maiden tower. Wander through the old city’s alleys or stop and have a cup of tea.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

It may sound odd, but hear us out—this museum houses some truly beautiful and unique Azeribaijani art and artifacts, including intricate carpets weaved using traditional techniques.
