It seems like Madagascar has it all. Whether you’re looking to explore its stunning nature and see endemic wildlife or just relax on the beach and soak in the sunshine, this island will make it happen. However, before you hop on the first flight there, there are a few things you need to know before visiting Madagascar. Check them out below.

You’ll Need a Visa

Tourists will need to obtain a visa before entering Madagascar regardless of the country of origin. You can secure a visa at the Madagascar Embassy in the United States before heading on the trip or get one at the airport. The tourist visa will allow you to stay in the country for up to 90 days.

Best Time to Visit is the Dry Season

Tropical rain might sound romantic to some people, but visiting Madagascar during the rainy season will efficiently ruin your experience. So instead, book your trip from May to October, when it’s the dry season. This way, you’ll get to experience everything the island has to offer without getting wet and/or swarmed with mosquitos.

Bring Cash with You

While you can use credit cards in bigger cities, they will become almost worthless in small towns and villages. This is why you should bring cash (preferably in smaller bills) with you to pay for goods and services. Also, note that the ATMs in Madagascar are prone to breaking down, so don’t rely too much on them.

Take Care of Your Health

If you want your trip to Madagascar to go smoothly, then taking care of your health is a must. This includes getting the recommended vaccines, taking medications for malaria prevention, and applying mosquito repellant. Also, drink only bottled water and avoid food from street vendors.
