It’s not always easy to catch some Z’s while traveling. Airplanes tend to be havens of constant activity with crying babies and not enough legroom, while getting to sleep in the foreign environment of a hotel room can also be challenging. Don’t even get us started on trying to sleep at the airport during a long layover…

For some who battle to get some shut-eye, white noise has been a lifesaver. Containing all frequencies found in sound, the constant hum blocks out other disturbing noises and can improve sleep.

“White noise can mask intrusive and annoying sounds that make it difficult to fall asleep, especially during the light sleep stage, which accounts for about 50% of sleep time for most adults,” claims Dr. Bruce D. Forman, an insomnia specialist who is a member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

Those who rely on white noise often have a machine that emits the sound, but that is not always easy to travel with. If you have an iPhone, though, you’re sorted.

Simply go to Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut, and then select Background Sounds. If your phone is an iPhone 6S or newer, and running on iOS15 or above, you will be able to triple-click either your side button or home button to turn the white noise feature on or off.

Now you’re all set for taking a nap on the go!
