In general, traveling in China is not very expensive, but if you are interested in the big city experience, it might end up costing a bit more. One way of getting to see Chinese urban life for cheaper is staying in Hangzhou (pronounced Hang-Joe). This is why.
It’s the Real Deal
Hangzhou is a big city that feels like a regional capital. This means you will find less Western habits, less English spoken around and in general – a more Chinese experience than you would in the more international cities.
Shanghai is Close By
The city is a quick train ride away from Shanghai. It takes about an hour-and-a-half each way on the MagLev, so it’s very reasonable to combine the two destinations. Depending on your interests, you might just want to dedicate a day trip to Shanghai while staying in Hangzhou.
West Lake and Six Harmonies Pagoda
The city can hold its own when it comes to points of interest, with two main attractions that are considered a must-see for anyone visiting the region. A visit to West Lake should include a tour of the lake and a visit to the islands in its center, looking at the exquisite scene and seeing the iconic Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.
