In the Victorian era, there was widespread belief in the healing effects of thermal spring waters and certain towns around the UK became famous as sites to which thousands would flock in the hopes of curing ailments and injuries. Nowadays, many of these towns retain their interest for tourists, as they are typically beautiful, grand and wealthy from the money that the spas brought in. Here are three of the finest to explore.

Bath, South West

This grand city in the south west of England is known as Jane Austen’s town, because she lived here for several years. As well as the still functioning Victorian era spa, where you can get luxury treatments done, there are Roman era baths to explore, stunning streets, and plenty of lovely cafes and eateries.

Matlock, North West

Matlock was one of the most famous spa towns of its day, and is still visited for its stunning views over the hills of the Peak District. This whimsical town has plenty of character, and you can visit the local museum for a history of the area during the Victorian era.

Royal Leamington Spa, Midlands

There is a clue in the name when it comes to this former spa town! Although the Victorian era spas may no longer function, the number of luxury, modern spas in this area mean you can still consider yourself in ‘spa country’! Easily reachable from London by train, why not treat yourself to a day of rest and relaxation in a town that really knows how to do those things well?
