Traveling when you have health issues is always an extra challenge, and diabetes can be particularly tough as it requires vigilance throughout the day every day. But that in no way means that you shouldn’t travel if you have diabetes. To make your travel experience as smooth as possible, here are a few tips you can follow.

See Your Doctor Before You Go

Before you go on your trip, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor in which you can tell them about your upcoming plans and have them make any recommendations that they might have, such as if you need to adjust your insulin for the new time zone. You can also ask for a doctor’s note that you can bring with you around stating that you have diabetes and why you need your medicines.

Talk to the Airline

Make sure to check in with your airline before your flight to ensure you can get a meal that fits your dietary requirements, check to see if they can refrigerate your medications for you on board, and inquire about any other ways they can potentially help you.

(Over)Prepare

Always pack twice as much medication as you think you’ll need, and consider about how you’ll store it. Also think about bringing healthy snacks with you and look ahead to see if there are restaurants you’ll want to eat at or specific menu items that you’ll want to order where you go.
