Formed by two volcanoes rising out of Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island is one of the must-see spots in this Central American country. You should make time for a day trip to this breathtaking island while visiting Nicaragua, and here are three spots that you should check out first.

Concepción Volcano

Since Ometepe consists of two volcanoes, it’s natural they’re its biggest attraction. Concepción forms the northwest part of the island and it’s the larger of the two. It’s an active stratovolcano that’s pretty popular with tourists despite its numerous eruptions, and it offers several climbing trails and pristine tropical surroundings.

Maderas Volcano

If a visit to an active volcano isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll like Maderas much more than Concepción. This volcano doesn’t have a history of recorded activity, and it’s much easier to explore it. It’s pretty popular with climbers, but you should also consider taking one of the guided tours to the scenic crater lake at its center.

Tropical Beaches

After exploring Ometepe’s volcanoes and the many natural wonders they have in store, you should sit back and relax at one of the island’s beautiful beaches. They’re scattered all across Ometepe’s shores, and Mangos, Santo Domingo, Arena Blanca, and San Fernando are some of the most popular.
