Unusual Things You Must Eat in Japan

There are so many reasons to visit Japan… Food is just one of them. But once you’ve had your fill of the typical sushi and ramen, what else can you eat? Well, here are some strange foods you don’t want to miss on your trip to Japan—if you’re an adventurous eater.

Natto

Natto is fermented soybeans, and it’s a common Japanese breakfast food. It’s gooey, sticky, slimy, smelly, and absolutely great for you. It’s also cheap, which is a major plus. Eat it with some rice with soy, mustard, and pickles for the full experience.

Batta

Looking for a crunchy, salty afternoon snack that is much healthier than potato chips? Look no further than batta—also called inago. That’s what the Japanese call fried grasshopper. It may not make a pretty picture, but they go great with beer.

Umi Budo

An Okinawan specialty, sea grapes refers to a specific kind of seaweed that resembles tiny little grapes. It’s got a burst in your mouth juicy salty flavor and is typically eaten dipped in soy sauce. This is a great option for the vegetarian and/or budget-conscious eater in Japan.
