Given its unique climate, it’s no surprise that Japan is home to some of the weirder and more wonderful wild animals of the world. Here’s a look at some of the spectacular wildlife you will find native to the country.
Asian Black Bear
The Asian Black Bear is Japan’s largest wild animal. It can be found in mountains throughout Japan, even on the outskirts of Tokyo.
Tanuki
Tanuki is a kind of raccoon dog found on Sensujima Island. They change form to disguise themselves as everyday objects, or sometimes as humans.
Siberian Flying Squirrel
The Siberian Flying Squirrel can be found on the Japanese mainland. They have adorable big eyes and can jump dozens of meters between trees. Hence the name.
Snow Monkeys
The Japanese Macaque, or Snow Monkey, is native to Japan. These monkeys can be found in the north of the country.
Giant Salamander
Giant salamanders grow up to 1.5 meters long. They live in streams, although they are unfortunately endangered due to hunting.
