One of the most beautiful cities in Serbia, right next to Belgrade and Novi Sad, has to be Niš.

Located down south, Niš is a somewhat unusual city – although not very famous, it has such a rich history and laidback culture that it must get on your next travel list.

Tradition is alive and strong here. There is the Nish Fortress, a big castle that stands proudly since the Ottoman Empire. It was built in the 18th century by the Turks, over the remains of a destroyed Byzantine fortification.

Right next to the fortress you’ll find a very lively market, where you can find many hidden treasures.

Surprisingly, Niš also has one of the few fully preserved concentration camps from World War II, the Red Cross Concentration Camp.

Anywhere you go, whether it’s the famous Kazandžijsko Sokače street or a local traditional “kafana” (a distinct type of bistro), you can feel the warmth and hospitality of the locals. All they want to do is feed you delicious traditional Serbian food, pour you another glass of ice-cold rakia or beer, and tell you their wild stories. Doesn’t sound that bad, right?
