From a young age, we are taught that snakes are scary and venomous. The stories can sometimes be so terrifying, that some people even develop an ophidiophobia, the abnormal fear of these reptiles.

However, there are snake farms all around the world which aim to reduce people’s fear and demonstrate that, in general, it is good to have a snake around the house, because it keeps the unwanted pests away.

One of them is the Snake Farm located in the very center of Bangkok, Thailand. The oldest snake farm in Asia is the part of the Thai Red Cross Institute and has a total of 1,500 snakes, 60 different Thai and exotic species.

Exploring the farm can be very educational and entertaining, both for adults and for kids. At 2:30pm on weekdays and 11am on weekends there is a show presented to the visitors.

Everybody sits in a small auditorium located on the side of the zoo. After that, the snake keeper casually walks in with a large snake in his hands. The doctor starts talking about the snake world in general and about the one he is currently showing. Visitors, if they are lucky enough, can also witness a snake getting “milked,” with its venom later used for anti-venom production.
