When you travel, you’re bound to make mistakes—some more painful than others (has anybody else been robbed abroad, or is that just us?). The good news is that making mistakes means learning important lessons, ones that allow you not to repeat the same mistake twice. And luckily for you, we’ve compiled some travel lessons we’ve learned the hard way—so you don’t have to.

Carry Toilet Paper

When you’re traveling, you often end up having to use less-than-ideal bathrooms (or even going to the bathroom outside). Carrying around your own toilet paper will save you on multiple occasions.

Don’t Overpack

The world is full of lots and lots and lots of stairs. You will often have to climb a long, winding staircase to get to your hotel, Airbnb, or hostel. So do yourself a favor and pack light (literally).

Keep Your Friends Close, and Your Purse Closer

Tourists are always going to look like easy targets for theft, so use your street smarts and keep your belongings close to your body. A zipped fanny pack, side purse, or backpack worn in front are all good options.

Always Expect the Unexpected (Weather)

We can barely know what to expect with the weather in our hometowns, let alone abroad. So be prepared and always have that umbrella, those layers, and that waterproof poncho or thin jacket handy.
