The last couple of months have been filled with more than a couple of natural disasters. Although no one wants to think about it happening to them, earthquakes; hurricanes; and tsunamis can happen anywhere, so it’s always best to be prepared. Here are some tips to keep you safe.

Stay Calm

Panicking is the most natural reaction, but it won’t help anyone. Take some deep breaths and try to remain calm. Remember that locals have probably gone through this before, and you can take cues from them.

Follow Instructions

Pay attention to emergency alerts and follow instructions from local authorities. If they tell you to evacuate, do so immediately. You can also check in with your embassy to find out if there are any special directions to follow.

Pack the Essentials

It’s a good idea to have your passport, cash, phone charger, medications, and any other essential items in a waterproof bag. In the case of an emergency, you may need to leave your hotel or accommodation quickly, so it’s best to be prepared.

Stay in Touch

Oftentimes these situations are not just scary for you, but also for friends and family who may have heard of the events. As soon as you are able to, let your loved ones know of your whereabouts and if you are safe. If you have a travel companion, make sure you stick together.
