Paphos is excellent for clean beaches, warm weather, and superb Mediterranean food. However, there is much more to do than just a sunny beach destination. With it being located south of Turkey and north of Israel, Cyprus’s long and rich history has developed over thousands of years. Here are our top things to see in the area.

Explore the Castle

The Paphos castle, built by the Byzantines over a thousand years ago, sits in the western part of the harbor. While it was in an earthquake in 1222, and was rebuilt twice. the current structure was built by the Turks in 1592. The castle was used as a prison and for storing salt. Interestingly, it is a site for many Island festivals, concerts, operas, ballets, and even famous performers.

The Old Town

Another great way to see the island is by getting lost in a city you don’t know. Wondering the streets is a great way to learn about the city’s people and culture. The old town of Paphos was designated a European Capital of Culture in 2019. It was recently refurbished, giving it a new yet old vibe as you stroll through its pedestrianized streets.

Swim Around Aphrodite’s Rock

In Greek mythology, Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, known as Venus to the Romans. She even has her own rock, located a 20-minute drive east of the island. It is one of the top things to do for couples. This beautiful beach has three big rocks just offshore, and legend has it that if a woman swims around the rock three times, she will find the love of her life and eternal beauty. So it’s the perfect spot for your girl’s trip!
