El Capitan is located by Yosemite Valley in Northern California. It is a part of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, but it requires a lot more skill to tame than any other mountain. It is nearly 3,000 feet high, which is just shy of a whole kilometer going up. The climb attracts adventure seekers from near and far, but few actually make it near the top.
The first person to ever climb the mountain without ropes was Tommy Caldwell. “El Cap is unfathomably huge,” he says. “It’s over 3,000 feet of sheer granite; looking at it, it doesn’t seem right – it doesn’t seem like you should be able to climb it.”
It takes the majority of people days to reach the top with ropes. Looking at it, its easy to see what Caldwell is talking about. The idea of climbing the mountain free of a safety net is horrifying.
