The list of reasons why one should visit Peru is endless. Experiencing Machu Picchu and the opportunity to meet Inca culture alone should be enough to entice you to book a trip there, while stunning nature, friendly locals, and intriguing food are just a bonus. But with that being said, there are some things you should know before you actually board the plane.

You Don’t Need a Visa

U.S. citizens don’t need a visa to visit Peru as tourists. All you need is a valid passport that is valid for at least six more months from the date you enter Peru.

You Might Experience Altitude Sickness

Most of Peru’s main attractions, including Machu Picchu, are set in the mountains, so you might experience some altitude sickness while visiting them. Make sure to drink enough water and tone down with the alcohol if you want your symptoms to be mild.

You Need to Ask Before Taking Photos

If you see Peruvians dressed in traditional clothes, don’t rush to take a photo and post it on Instagram. Instead, first, ask for permission. In some instances, people are making money this way and ask for a fee.

You’ll Need Cash

Speaking about money, you will need cash since most services and establishments don’t accept any other form of payment. The currency is the Peruvian sol, although some places will take the U.S. dollar.

Don’t Drink Tap Water

Tap water in Peru is not for drinking. As a matter of fact, you should avoid even brushing your teeth with it because it’s not the cleanest. You can shower, of course, but watch that it doesn’t get in your mouth.
