5 Places Celebrating “The Sound of Music” in Austria

The Sound of Music has a timeless quality and is still watched by millions every year. Set in Salzburg in Austria, the birthplace of Mozart, there are many places to visit where the film comes alive. Filled with music and wonderment, the following 5 places are definitely a must-see.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

Perhaps the best-known song from the movie, “Do Re Mi,” was filmed at Mirabell Palace Gardens. As you enter the gardens, you will see the Greek fencing statues, where the Von Trapp children played around, making funny faces. Join queues of people attempting similar selfies. Then visit the fountain, where many of the singing scenes were filmed.

The Hedge Maze and Vine Tunnel

Before you leave Mirabell Gardens, keep an eye out for the vine tunnel and the hedge maze. This is the original tunnel featured in The Sound of Music, where Maria and the children danced and skipped along. Enjoy the maze and try not to get lost, as there are lots more things to do in Salzburg.

Salzburg Marionette Theater

If you remember the puppet show that Maria and the children put on for the Von Trapp family, you will want to go and see the Marionette Theater. They may be playing the “Lonely Goatherd,” or indeed you will be able to watch a puppet version of the whole film. An event not to be missed by Sound of Music fans.

Winkler Terrace

The views from this terrace, set up high on Monk’s hill, are used for various scenes in the film. The area is stunning, and as you relax in the tranquil setting, you can visualize Maria and the children dancing through the landscape. This terrace offers some of the best panoramic views of Salzburg, so get your Instagram shots ready.

The Rock Riding School

As the film begins to climax and tensions build between the Von Trapps and the Nazis, the film setting moves to this Rock Riding School. It is here that the family rehearse and stage their incredible escape into the hills. This was one of the only interior scenes that were filmed on location, rather than Hollywood studios. Definitely a good way to end your Sound of Music tour.
