“Hygge” pronounced “Hoo-ga” is the Danish practice of creating happiness or warmth in the soul. It does not directly translate into the English language but is something that is better felt than described.

On our trip to Copenhagen, we left no stone unturned when trying to discover why the Danish are the happiest people on the planet. Here are 5 secrets we learned.

Practice Gratitude

The first secret we learned is one of the most important. Hygge involves feeling grateful at every opportunity. Whether it’s for the people in your life or for a nice cup of tea, being thankful is crucial to the way of happiness.

Create a Cozy Nook

A cozy atmosphere is important for practicing hygge. Light candles, buy a plant that makes you smile, anything that makes you feel the warmth and comfort of home.

Slow Down

Whatever you’re doing, take your time. You can do something quickly when it’s needed without rushing. If you’re cooking a meal, invite your friends over and cook together. Grounding yourself in the present is an important part of hygge.

Help Others

Improving your own happiness comes hand in hand with improving the happiness of others. In Denmark, there are tons of organizations designed to help others.

Enjoy Nature

Enjoying nature in the hygge way means more than just going for a walk. Take in the sights and sounds and connect to the nature that surrounds you in every way you can.
