Charleston, South Carolina has been around since the late 17th century, and so much of the old historical nature of Charleston has been preserved through the generations.

Being in Charleston feels somewhere in between feeling like you’re in a history book, a bopping city, and a gorgeous beach town. If this sounds good to you, you have to go to Charleston.

One place in Charleston you have to visit is the Battery. This was the defensive sea wall during the Civil War, because it’s right on the water. Nowadays, people go there to check out the stunning oversized homes, which give Charleston such a magical feel.

Charleston also has a ton of nearby beaches like Folly Beach, Kiawah Island, and more. Being able to be in a great city one day and drive only 20 minutes to the beach the next is so special and another reason why Charleston has something other cities just don’t have.

If you have a sweet tooth, you cannot leave Charleston without trying a praline. These pralines are caramel-y, nutty, soft, and really give you the perfect combination — all in a little round treat. You can often see bakeries making them fresh, which is super exciting!

Montreal is a stunning French-Canadian city that is so lively and full of culture. While there is much to do and see in the city, there is one thing that everyone agrees you have to do: try poutine.

Learning about history is always fascinating, but there are some ways to do it that are much more engaging. Probably the best way is to go to a living-history museum, where you’re seeing everything happen in front of your eyes instead of just hearing about it. These are some of the best in the US, so check them out!

Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia is the mecca for people who love historical reenactments, because they take it to the next level at Colonial Williamsburg. Not only are people dressed up, but they are really doing the work that people in colonial times would have been doing. The blacksmiths really blacksmith, the cooks cook, and so on. It’s so fun to go around to the different areas and visit the people working hard, and actually doing the work they talk to you about.

Old Salem

Winston Salem, North Carolina was founded in the 18th century by a Moravian community that immigrated from Europe. At the Old Salem Museums and Gardens, everything has gone back to the time when Winston Salem was first founded almost 300 years ago. Everyone is in traditional garb and the grounds are made to look just as they were hundreds of years ago, and they also do work similar to that of Colonial Williamsburg.

There’s no doubt you should always bring a book when you’re traveling, no matter what kind of reader you are! Here are some great reasons why a book is your best friend during a trip.

Solo Travel

If you’re traveling by yourself, there’s no doubt you need a book. Reading is an activity that’s still active even if you’re alone, and you can do it anywhere! Go read at a local bar or restaurant if you want to do something at night but don’t just want to sit on your phone all night. That way you can be a part of the local action but still entertain yourself.

On the Way

Whether you’re on a flight or a long bus or train, traveling to a place is the best excuse to get some reading it. Especially if you’re someone who doesn’t read a lot, it’ll put you in the mood for vacation which is super fun. Relaxing into the vacation mindset before you arrive is half the fun!

Time to Chill

If you want to blend in with the locals and take a break from site seeing, taking out a book and checking out a park or a green space! You might even meet some friends while you’re at it.

When people think of coffee, they probably think of Colombia, and maybe Italy because of espresso. But, the truth of the matter is that coffee was first harvested and brewed in Ethiopia! That comes as a surprise to many people, but once you visit, you’ll see that coffee is deeply embedded in the culture of this East African country.

The arabica plant from which coffee is from was first found and cultivated in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia, which is how the word coffee came about. Scholars say that coffee was first cultivated back in the 9th century, which is pretty amazing.

Just as people in Japan have tea ceremonies, people in Ethiopia have coffee ceremonies!  The ceremony is very special and is meant to engage all five of your senses during the whole time. The ceremony consists of roasting, grinding, and brewing the coffee, and more. The ceremony is not only to appreciate the coffee more but to bring people together as a social gathering.

Usually, you have to be personally invited to a coffee ceremony, but in the capital of Addis Ababa, there are some places where you can experience a more informal ceremony at places like Alem Bunna or other coffee shops. But even if you just grab a cup of joe to go, you’ll be amazed by how incredible the coffee is, and you’ll never look back!

The Baltimore Habor, which is also sometimes called the Inner Harbor, is definitely one of the best representations of the center of Baltimore. Not only is it beautiful since it’s right on the inner harbor of the Patapsco River. So if you’re in Baltimore and looking for things to do at the Baltimore Harbor, this the guide for you.

The National Aquarium is a site that everyone loves no matter your age. Being on the harbor and being inside the aquarium is such a fun experience, and with more than 17,000 animals from over 750 species, there is plenty to look at and learn about.

If astronomy is more of your thing, the Maryland Science Center would be your cup of tea. The center has both an observatory and a planetarium, which is so fun and unique. Beyond that, the harbor has stunning water views, ships, and tons of restaurants and shops to enjoy.

There are also amazing places to eat at the Inner Harbor that give you incredible views of the water. If you want a very upscale experience, go to the Explorer’s Lounge inside the Intercontinental Hotel. Taos is a large town in New Mexico that is often looked over. Though Santa Fe and Albuquerque are two cool cities, Taos is a completely different world. Taos is known as being a hot spot for artists and artisans in New Mexico, and you can find some truly breathtaking work in so many mediums. It’s also stunning since it is surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BziRAP8nGfM/

You definitely should go to the Taos Pueblo while you’re visiting, as it is a living relic of history. The community was inhabited by the Native American Puebloan people for over 1,000 years, and most of the buildings that are still standing have been around for 600-1,000 years.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B01Y_ajhJPo/

There are so many different places to experience art in Taos, but one that you cannot miss it the Harwood Museum of Art. The pieces are all done by local artists and you really get a feel for the region through their art.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhAKCrSHA0v/

Another interesting museum that combines art and local jewelry is the Millicent Rogers Museum. Millicent donated much of her locally made turquoise jewelry to be on display, but the museum also has many other pieces by famous people like Maria Martinez the famous potter, as well as pieces of art from up to 2,000 years ago.

Because San Francisco has such a major Japanese population, the food scene in the city gets all the benefits. So if you are planning a trip to San Fran, these Japanese restaurants are ones you have to go to. They will completely change your view of Japanese cuisine and will leave your tastebuds on fire.

Saru Sushi

You know that if you’re going to a Michelin Guide recommended sushi restaurant, the dishes are going to be incredible. Saru is one of the best sushi restaurants in the city because they use super high-quality ingredients and every dish is made as perfectly as possible.

The attention they put into each aspect of making the sushi is another key reason that Saru stands out from other restaurants. Their rice is delicious and is grown in Japan, and their selection of soy sauces are ridiculously tasty and even includes one that is made in-house.

Halu

If you’re looking for a different kind of Japanese restaurant, Halu is one that brings a major twist. Halu is a ’60s, Beetle-inspired theme restaurant but actually isn’t too kitschy. They serve is yakitori and izakaya-style food rather than typical sushi, so if you are in the mood to have fun some and eat incredibly crafted Japanese cuisine, you have to check out Halu.

Booking a hotel can be a stressful process, especially if you want to be cost-efficient. But if you follow these tips, you’ll find the perfect hotel for you at a price within your vacation budget.

Breakfast

Something that should not be overlooked when booking a hotel is whether it comes with free breakfast or not. It used to be that most hotels offered breakfast, even if it was just continental, but that’s just not the case anymore. Strangely enough, the nicer and most expensive hotels will rarely come with free breakfast, unless you get a deal with it included. So, if you’re a big breakfast person or have people with you that are, it probably pays to stay at a place where it’s included.

New Hotels

What a lot of people don’t think about is staying at brand new hotels. While some people get attached to certain places, if you stay at new hotels wherever you go, you’re more likely to get a better deal. This is because newer hotels don’t have the credibility of older hotels, which makes them more susceptible to empty rooms. So, if you really want a good deal, research new hotels that have just opened up.

Baklava is the classic Middle Eastern treat that everyone who’s ever tasted it loves. It’s a pastry made with phyllo dough and nuts, and it is doused in a sweet sugary syrup.

In the same family, knafeh is an Arabic dessert that is made from cheese, shredded pastry, and soaked in syrup as well.

Together, these two desserts are the epitome of life in the Middle Eastern, and if you find yourself in Israel, these are the place to go and get them.

Shuk Ha’Carmel

Also known as the Carmel Market, this Tel Avivian market is known for selling trinkets, fresh produce and, of course, baklava and knafeh. As you walk through this colorful market, you’ll be tempted by the many stalls selling both treats in many different varieties. You will find tons of choices for baklava especially, and there’s nothing better than ending a market trip with a sweet treat.

Abd El-Hadi Sweets

This cafeteria-style cafe in Haifa has knafeh and baklava wherever you turn. There are so many varieties that are hard to find anywhere else, and since you’re in Haifa, it’s an Arab-run business, which means you’re getting some real deal pastries. They are most famous for the knafeh, so don’t leave without a big slice.

You definitely should go to the Taos Pueblo while you’re visiting, as it is a living relic of history. The community was inhabited by the Native American Puebloan people for over 1,000 years, and most of the buildings that are still standing have been around for 600-1,000 years.

There are so many different places to experience art in Taos, but one that you cannot miss it the Harwood Museum of Art. The pieces are all done by local artists and you really get a feel for the region through their art.
