Cartagena, Colombia, is widely considered one of the street food capitals of the world. The city’s streets offer some of the most amazing and unusual dishes you will ever try out. We recommend you try as many of them as you can but make sure not to miss out on the following ones.
Patacones
Patacones are double-fried plantain slices that come in all sorts of variations in Cartagena. They can be eaten with a side of cheese sauce or hogao sauce, while some vendors also top them with shredded beef and other ingredients.
Papa Rellenas
Papa rellenas are popular all across Latin America. Potato-based dough or simple mashed potato is filled with meat and veggies before being formed into a ball. It is then fried and served plain or alongside sauces.
Mango Biche
This unique street food is made by cutting unripe mango into strips and then coating them with lime juice and salt. You can also ask for a spicy version, in which case the street food vendor will top the mango stripes with some chili powder as well.
Arepas
Arepas is considered the staple of Colombian cuisine. These corn patties can be enjoyed plain, but they are way better when filled with cheese, meat, or veggies.
