Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the most remarkable cities in the world. Situated on two continents, it is rich in history and culture and has an abundance of tourist attractions. As such, it is one of those destinations that you could visit time and time again and still have lots left to discover.

But let’s say you only have 24 hours to see what Istanbul is all about. In that case, here is how to spend them.

Head to Besiktas for a Filling Breakfast

Besiktas is a great place to start your day in Istanbul. The neighborhood is filled with cozy cafes and restaurants that serve delicious and filling breakfasts that will give you fuel for the rest of the day. Our recommendation is Peynir Ekmek or Cakmak Kahvalti Salonu.

Marvel at Dolmabahce Palace

Once you have finished your meal, make your way to the nearby Dolmabahce Palace. Situated on the Bosporus, this luxurious palace once served as the main administrative center of the Ottoman Empire. You can marvel at it from the outside or opt for a quick tour to see its stunning gardens.

Get a Baklava at Taksim Square and Glance at Galata Tower

Your next stop should be Taksim Square, the city’s largest square. It is a busy area filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. While here, make sure to enter the dessert restaurant Faruk Gulluoglu and try the best baklava you ever had. Quickly glance at the Galata Tower and hop on the tram towards Sultanahmet neighborhood.

Visit Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace

As soon as you step off the tram, make your way to Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace. These are two of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks and are in close proximity to each other, allowing you to check them both without wasting valuable time.

Shop at Grand Bazaar

A visit to Istanbul wouldn’t be complete without checking its Grand Bazaar. Here you can stock on clothes, jewelry, antiques, spices, and snacks, or simply explore its countless shops.

Have a Relaxing Night at Galataport

Finally, to finish your day on a high note, head to Istanbul’s waterfront known as Galataport. Offering highly-rated restaurants, brand-name shops, and art and culture attractions, it is perfect for a relaxing night.

In the serene landscapes of Japan, the Zenbo Seinei retreat offers a unique and authentic experience of traditional Japanese monastic life. This peaceful haven is not just a place to relax—it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in Zen Buddhist practices and connect with your inner self.

At Zenbo Seinei, days begin with Zen meditation (Zazen), a practice central to understanding the Zen way of life. The stillness and discipline of Zazen help visitors find mental clarity and peace. Following meditation, guests participate in Buddhist chanting sessions, an experience that is both spiritually uplifting and culturally enriching.

The retreat also offers a chance to engage in ‘Shakyo’, the meditative practice of copying Buddhist scriptures. This activity is not just about the art of calligraphy but also about focusing the mind and embodying the teachings of the scriptures.

Meals at Zenbo Seinei are an introduction to ‘Shojin Ryori’, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. Prepared with seasonal and local ingredients, these meals are simple, nourishing, and thoughtfully made, reflecting the Zen principles of mindfulness and gratitude.

Guests can also partake in tea ceremonies and guided walks in the surrounding natural beauty, allowing for a deeper connection with nature and traditional Japanese culture.

India, a land of diverse cultures and traditions, is renowned for its vibrant festivals that paint the country with a kaleidoscope of colors and joy. Each festival in India is a window into its rich heritage and offers a unique experience to visitors and locals alike.

Diwali

One of the most iconic celebrations is Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Homes and streets are adorned with diyas (oil lamps) and rangolis (colorful designs), symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. The air is filled with the spirit of togetherness, joy, and an array of delicious sweets.

Holi

Holi, known as the Festival of Colors, is another spectacle. This joyous occasion celebrates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. People smear each other with vibrant colors, dance to lively music, and share treats, reflecting a spirit of forgiveness and friendship.

Durga Puja

Not to be missed is the Durga Puja in West Bengal, a grand celebration of the Hindu goddess Durga. Elaborate pandals (temporary structures) are set up, showcasing artistic themes and exquisite craftsmanship. The rhythmic beats of dhak (traditional drums), the scent of incense, and the chanting of hymns create a mesmerizing atmosphere.

Onam

In Kerala, Onam marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. The festival is celebrated with a sumptuous feast, traditional boat races, and the elegant dance of Kathakali.

Istanbul, the city where East meets West, is a mesmerizing blend of history and modernity. Straddling two continents, there’s so much to explore. Here are three must-visit destinations in Istanbul to get a taste of this unique city.

Hagia Sophia

No visit to Istanbul is complete without stepping into the Hagia Sophia, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Originally built as a cathedral in the 6th century, it was later converted into a mosque and now serves as a museum. The Hagia Sophia is a testament to Istanbul’s rich and diverse history.

The Grand Bazaar

For a taste of Istanbul’s vibrant market culture, the Grand Bazaar is a great stop. One of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, it’s easy to go into sensory overload here. There are hundreds of shops to explore. As you wander through the labyrinth of streets, you’ll find everything from hand-painted ceramics and lanterns to spices, jewelry, and Turkish textiles.

Bosphorus Strait

This narrow, natural strait not only separates Europe and Asia but also offers some of the best views of the city. For a fun activity, consider taking a cruise to see all of Istanbul’s most famous sights from the water.

There are a few cities that have made their everyday life a bit brighter with their colorful architecture lining their streets. From historical hues that tell stories of the past to contemporary color palettes, the bright colors give a special feel to these locations. Let’s take a look.

Burano, Italy

Burano is a picturesque island famous for its brightly colored fishermen’s houses. The kaleidoscope of colors here isn’t just for aesthetics. It had a practical purpose. Fishermen started painting their homes in vivid colors to distinguish them through the thick fog common in this area.

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning example of colonial architecture brought to life with a palette of rich colors. There are many pastel-colored buildings in the historic district. You can also find brightly painted facades in the neighborhood of Getsemani. So enjoy exploring all of Cartagena’s colorful corners.

Jaipur, India

Known as the “Pink City”, Jaipur’s color story is full of historical meaning. In 1876, the city was painted pink, a color traditionally associated with hospitality, to welcome the Prince of Wales. Today, its historic center retains this pink hue. The Hawa Mahal and the City Palace are two of the most notable examples.
