Check Out This Fine-Dining Restaurant Hidden Behind a Painting in a New York City Gallery

New York City is known for hustle and bustle, but tucked away from the noise are hidden cocktail bars and gardens. And one of NYC’s best-kept secrets is Frevo, a contemporary restaurant in Greenwich Village. This one’s hidden behind a painting in a New York City Gallery. Once you find it, the surprises continue, getting better and better.

The speakeasy-style restaurant is located at the West 8th Street address and you’ll find a small art gallery, not a restaurant. Frevo is hidden behind one of the colorful canvases created by French artist Toma-L. When you pull open one of the paintings, there’s a secret door that invites those who have a reservation to take a seat at one of the 14 counter seats. For larger parties, there are also two tables to accommodate up to six guests. The restaurant features an open kitchen overlooking the chef’s work.

“My business partner, Bernardo Silva, and I always dreamt of opening a restaurant in NYC since we were younger,” Brazillian chef Franco Sampogna told Travel + Leisure. “When we found this space, it was larger than we initially planned…That’s when Bernardo came up with the idea of using almost 30% of the space as an art gallery in the front, using one of the artworks as the gateway to the restaurant.”

The menu uses only the freshest ingredients, sourced locally from farmers and producers and it offers six courses and changes month to month. The owners pride themselves on the sustainability of the restaurant. Per person, the price is $158 and wine pairing is $105 per person. Premium wine pairing is $240 per person. While it’s expensive, the food and experience look absolutely amazing!
