While we’re unable to visit many destinations we may have planned to see this year, it’s still possible to discover new places, at least through the internet. Since the start of the lockdown, people have been more creative than ever in efforts to bring everyone else a slice of what they can’t see in real life. It started with virtual tours of world-famous museums and spread quickly. Now, there’s an app that simulates hiking along the Appalachian Trail.

The Appalachian Trail in West Virginia is a location that attracts many visitors every year. This year, however, everything’s different so the trail has been mostly empty. Thanks to a new app called Walk the Distance, you can transfer your daily steps into the distance on the trail as if you were walking there.

The app comes with a social aspect and allows you to compete with other people. It will show your picture pinned in the place you’ve reached on Google Maps graphics. That way you can see where your friends are at and how you compete to them.

The app will add up the steps you take every day until you walk the entire trail that’s 2,200 miles long. You can use it as a motivation to move more on a daily basis and reach the goal faster.
