How to Find the Best Gelato in Italy

Italy is known for amazing food, and the best way to finish a delicious meal is with some of Italy’s signature ice cream—gelato, as they call it. There are gelato parlors in every city and town around the country, and here’s how you can find the best one available no matter where you are.

Watch the Color

To make sure the vendor is selling gelato with no artificial colors or flavors, pay attention to banana or pistachio gelato. If they are bright yellow/bright green, you’ll know that’s not the natural color bananas and pistachios come in so you’ll probably want to move on to the next place.

Check Consistency

Ice cream that can be stacked high is not what you want. If the vendor is able to make tall desserts with it it means that it has plenty of air and not an intense taste you want. Go for creamy, heavy textures that offer full flavor instead.

Go With Seasonal Flavors

If you’re getting fruit flavors and have made sure that the vendor makes fresh gelato, you’ll want to taste fruits that are actually in season and at their best flavor. Eat strawberry gelato in May, but skip it in November.
