Plane-Friendly Snacks to Throw in Your Carry-On

If you’re a seasoned traveler, you probably know what the deal is with airline food. Generally speaking, it’s not the tastiest, and not usually the healthiest option either. Sometimes you’ve got no other choice, but it’s best to be prepared with something you know you’ll enjoy snacking on as well. It’s also important to keep in mind that some people can suffer an allergic reaction just by being in the vicinity of certain foods, so avoid bringing the most common culprits, like nuts, into an enclosed space. Here are some of our favorite snacks to bring along whenever we fly:

Prepared Fruit

Prepare your fruit in advance to avoid being left with apple cores and bananas peels and no place to put them. Fill a portable container with apple or orange slices, grapes, or any fruit you most enjoy. You won’t have to worry about where to put your trash, and you’re guaranteed a good source of vitamins and minerals on your flight. If you’re worried about apples turning brown, just squeeze a little lemon juice onto them and you’re good to go.

Jerky

If you’re into beef, by all means, go for it, but we also love a good plant-based option. Some companies, like Eat the Change, are now making jerky out of mushrooms for a savory snack that’s lighter on the planet. It’s a filling and satisfying option perfect to throw in your carry-on.

Veggies and Hummus

Just like with fruit, pre-cutting veggies is a great way to make sure you’re eating something healthy without having to worry about where to put your scraps. Put some hummus in a small takeaway container on the side to round out your snack with some protein.
