The Scilly Isles are a collection of small islands which form an archipelago, situated off the south western coast of the UK. Although not far from the mainland, these islands have their own special charm. From the gorgeous sea views, to delicious food, to relaxing spas, there is something for everyone on the Scilly Isles. Read on for the highlights, which might just tempt you to book your next trip to this magical archipelago.

The Scenery

St Mary’s is the largest island, covering an area of six square miles. These means that wherever you are in the Scilly Isles, the sea is always visible. In summer the sun glints and sparkles on azure waves, whilst in the winter months storms make for an atmsopheric, exciting scene. Boat trips between the islands are easy to arrange, and offer an opportunity to get even closer to the ocean.

The Cuisine

The mild climate in the Scilly isles permits farmers to grow a wide array of crops, including grapes for wine making. Tasting tours around the vineyards are a must-do. Meanwhile, the sea offers an abundance of fresh fish and seafood, so expect to eat exceptionally well during your stay. You can try local delicacies, including pasties (pastry filled with a savory filling including meat and potato), or try from a range of cuisines offered by different restaurants across the island, including French, Italian and Spanish.

The Wildlife

The British author Michael Morpurgo made the Scilly island of Bryher famous when he published his novel Why the Whales Came. In the book, the island is visited by narwhals traveling north to the Arctic to their feeding grounds. When you are in the Scilly isles, you can expect to see marine life including seals, dolphins, and porpoise. If you are really lucky, the islands may be visited by cetaceans including narwhals.

The Scilly Isles are a magical destination. They will make you feel a million miles from the day-to-day, all whilst being within easy reach of the mainland by plane, helicopter, or boat. These islands are not to be missed, so even if you only book a one-day trip, make sure to check them out when you are in the UK.
