Antarctica, the frozen wonderland at the bottom of the world, seems like a place that only scientists visit, right? Not necessarily. There are actually a handful of great ways for regular folks to set foot on this icy continent. In this article, we’ll explore the best ways to reach Antarctica, making your dream of visiting this unique destination a reality.

Cruise Ships

The most popular way to get to Antarctica is through cruise ships. Several cruise companies offer exciting journeys to this chilly paradise. You’ll board a comfortable ship in South America and sail across the Drake Passage. Along the way, you can spot whales, penguins, and icebergs. It’s like an expedition and vacation combined!

Flying

Another option is flying to King George Island, a jumping-off point for many Antarctic adventures. From there, you can take smaller planes to research stations or even guided tours. It’s a quicker route, but it’s worth every bit of the adventure.

So, if you’re dreaming of seeing the stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife of Antarctica, you don’t have to be a scientist. You can choose the best way that suits your style, whether it’s cruising or flying, and embark on an unforgettable journey to the world’s most mysterious continent.

If you’re an adventurous soul that is choosing to brave the cold and travel to Antarctica, you are in for a real treat. Traveling to this arctic continent will not just grant you incredible views, but you will also have the opportunity to see so many unique animals in their natural habitats. These are just some of the animals you need to look out for when you travel to Antarctica.

Emperor and Chinstrap Penguins

Everyone knows that there are penguins in Antarctica, but there are actually so many different types to look out for. Two of the most beautiful and famous types of penguins are Emperor and Chinstrap penguins. The Emperor penguins have that classic look and are probably the ones you first think of, whereas the Chinstrap penguins have a defined black line under its head (which is where it gets the “chinstrap” name).

Orca Whales

Although they are nicknamed “killer” whales, you do not want to miss an opportunity to see one of these beautiful creatures up close. Their iconic white and black patterned body is a magnificent sight.

Elephant Seals

Elephant seals definitely don’t look like your typical seal. Instead of having a rounded nose, these seals have what looks like a hanging trunk–not far off from an elephant. These creatures are huge and definitely worth marveling at during your trip!

Believe it or not, you can actually travel to the 7th Continent if you so desire. Although it’s completely covered in ice, and although it’s basically separated from the rest of the world, it’s actually pretty accessible—if you’re truly dedicated, that is. In the 2016-2017 season, over 45,000 people traveled to Antarctica, and here’s how you can do it too!

How To Get There

The way most people get to Antarctica is by going through Buenos Aires, Argentina. Once they’re there, they take another three and a half hour flight to Ushuaia, Argentina. From there, you’ll be able to take an expedition vessel to Antarctica by sea. This final leg of the trip is called the Drake Passage, which is 600 miles long and usually a day and a half long.

When You Can Go

The most ideal time to take a trip like this is from the late spring till the early fall, for obvious reasons. Due to the freezing cold temperatures, those months are actually the only time where the sea ice is melted enough to ensure passage. However, it’s important to remember that in the southern hemisphere, everything is the opposite, so late spring to early fall actually means October to March.

The southernmost, iciest, most isolated continent in the world—Antarctica certainly sees fewer travelers than the other continents. After all, it’s a pretty harsh environment down there. But if you’re the adventurous type and want to see this continent anyway, here are some tips you should be sure to follow.

Go in the Summer

Antarctica is pretty cold year-round, but the summer is definitely less harsh than the winter. So do your best to plan your trip for the warmer months of the year, so you’re not freezing your nose off. And don’t forget to wear layers. It can get pretty sunny, and you’ll want to have clothing options if the temperature is unexpectedly warm.

Pack Sunscreen

Speaking of the sun—no matter the temperature or cloud cover, don’t forget to pack, apply, and reapply sunscreen often when you visit Antarctica. That South pole sun is harsh!

Bring Seasickness Medication

If you’re visiting Antarctica on a cruise, be prepared for some pretty rocky seas, especially when you get to the Drake Passage—which is notorious for being rough, choppy, and windy. Having some dramamine on hand will make the experience much smoother.

Travel the globe and come stay at some of the most luxurious hotels in the most remote locations.

Whichaway Camp (Antarctica)

Antarctica itself is one of the most remote destinations in the world. Most people only get a chance to stay here if they are research scientists or support staff. However, for the traveler that wants to experience the harsh climate of this polar region, you can stay at Whichaway Camp, found in the White Desert. The camp is only accessible via private charter, and the glamping pods are like a 5-star hotel inside. A personal chef is also on hand to create all of your meals. A day trip on a private Gulfstream starts at $13,500.

Skylodge Adventure Suites (Sacred Valley, Peru)

To reach these pods, you have to climb 440 meters straight-up a mountain. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with views of the valley below. The pods you get to stay in have transparent walls, which gives you a 360-degree view of your surroundings at all times of the day. You can rent a pod for the night for around $1,485.

Uma Punakha (Bhutan)

Bhutan has only recently opened to tourists, and even then it is quite difficult to enter the country. Typically, you need to be invited by someone or a tourism agency. The Punakha Valley surrounds this simple hotel, which has luxe Bhutanese features and is designed to look like a fortress. The hotel is currently closed due to the pandemic.

The last place in the world that has no government or much contact with the outside world now offers a 12-day cruise. Let’s see what you will experience if you decide to take this amazing challenge.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo5BqkjnhcO/

While on this journey, you will realize how far Antarctica really is. Just the flight to start the cruise takes a few days.  After leaving the port, you will spend many days on the boat surrounded by only water. There is Wi-Fi on board, but the connection is so slow you will give up on it in the first hour.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2LHrVZBaA-/

Some days you will have a smooth sail, and others you will get huge waves and not be as comfortable.

Once you reach your first land destination, all of your clothes must undergo an agricultural inspection, ensuring that you haven’t accidentally transported seeds that might bring life to the continent.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2G77KPBaow/

When you are safe, you can go ahead and take a walk. On the walk you’ll see penguins and seals chilling on the ice. Because they rarely see people, they will not be afraid of you, but you should always keep a distance of four meters from them unless a penguin comes close to you and asks for a pet session.

The southernmost continent and location of the South Pole, with its mostly ice-laden landscape, barely has any human inhabitants.

There are cruises that traverse to the Antarctic Peninsula, which leads all the way to South America. Around 20,000 people make their way to Antarctica every year to gaze at the icebergs that are almost as tall as cruise ships.

Despite being a freezing region, it houses Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano in the world with lava lakes.

Before going on a cruise, heed these tips to maximize your vacation to the fullest.

Bring a Swimsuit

Contrary to popular belief, the Arctic is not absolutely freezing. Be sure to pack a swimsuit so you can lounge at the pool while taking in the breathtaking views.

Pack a Camera

You wouldn’t want to miss out on a special moment like these King Penguins congregating together on a patch of ice.

Ride a Raft

Besides being aboard the cruise ship, why not ask the crew members if you can sit on the raft to get a closer look at the wildlife and icebergs? There’s no harm in asking, and you can see a view of Antarctica like you’ve never seen it before!

While on this journey, you will realize how far Antarctica really is. Just the flight to start the cruise takes a few days.  After leaving the port, you will spend many days on the boat surrounded by only water. There is Wi-Fi on board, but the connection is so slow you will give up on it in the first hour.

Some days you will have a smooth sail, and others you will get huge waves and not be as comfortable.

Once you reach your first land destination, all of your clothes must undergo an agricultural inspection, ensuring that you haven’t accidentally transported seeds that might bring life to the continent.
