There is so much more to Auckland than its center. In fact, some of the best-hidden gems of this city are actually found around its suburbs. One such destination is Mount Eden or Maungawhau. The dormant volcanic cone towers 196 meters (610 feet) above sea level, making it the highest point in Auckland.

Paths lead up to the mountain from six different directions and the walk only takes about 15 minutes, depending on your fitness. Until recently, it was possible to drive right up to the summit, but vehicle access has been restricted due to concerns of erosion.

If you are able to hike up to the top, the breathtaking views of the city are definitely worth it. The isthmus and two harbors are visibly clear, allowing visitors to truly appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of their surroundings. Note that the symmetrical crater, known as Te Ipu Kai a Mataaho (the Food Bowl of Mataaho, the god of things hidden in the ground) is considered sacred, and should not be entered. The remainder of the mountain, however, is available to explore.

You can take a look inside the bookshops and vintage stores along Mt Eden Road or relax in one of the cafes or wine bars on the way. Start and finish your journey at the nearby Maungawhau Visitor Experience Centre, which offers insight into the geological and Maori cultural history of Mt. Eden.
