Vacations are expensive, which is why you obviously want to get the most bang for your buck. The best way to do that is to visit a place with a cheaper exchange rate, but even then, where do you go?

Each year, the Post Office Travel Money’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer determines where best to go, based on the cost of a three-course meal for two with wine; a cup of coffee; a bottle of local beer; a can of soda; suncream; and insect repellent. These were the top three destinations.

#3 Sunny Beach, Bulgaria

How can you resist a place that is called Sunny Beach? Located on the Black Sea coast, the seaside resort offers watersports and family activities like mini-golf and go-karting. You can also venture to the neighboring town of Nessebar which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

#2 Marmaris, Turkey

With its stunning beaches, Marmaris in Turkey is the ideal place to sunbathe or partake in scuba diving and jet-skiing. If the water isn’t your thing, you can also explore ancient ruins like the Marmaris Castle and the Carian Rock Tombs.

Old Plovdiv is officially the oldest city in Europe. It was founded around 6,000 BCE, and it’s located in South-Central Bulgaria. There are many incredible things you can see in Plovdiv, and here are some of them.

Hindliyan House

Among many houses built in the National Revival Style, the Hindliyan House is the most famous one. It’s one of the best examples of the traditional Bulgarian architecture. It was built in 1835 and was very luxurious, as proved by a huge fountain inside filled with rose water.

Kapana

Kapana is a new neighborhood that was just a big parking lot in the ‘90s. Today, however, it’s a creative center of the city, and it bursts with life and fresh energy. It’s the favorite place of young people and creatives to spend their days in cafes, art galleries, and boutiques.

Nightlife

Old Plovdiv is especially exciting during the night. There are many bars you can visit to taste the famous local red wines. If that makes you want more, book a wine tasting tour and learn about the local winemaking of which the locals are especially proud.

Eastern European countries have become popular in the eyes of backpackers in part due to the beautiful landscapes, but mainly due to the cheap prices they offer. A backpacking trip to Bulgaria is a wonderful experience.

The Bulgarian language is very similar to Russian, meaning Russian speakers will be able to speak and understand quite freely. Most of the signs are not in English, but you can get by with a good language translation app.

Bulgaria is a relatively safe country, but of course it is recommended to wear a money belt (especially on bus trips and crowded places).

https://www.instagram.com/p/CFe5sNUDsnk/

In the big cities, you can find places in hostels relatively cheaply, and in the summer you can stay in a tent in designated camping sites.

In Bulgaria, there is a convenient bus network. In more remote places you might have to hitchhike. Trains are much slower than buses in Bulgaria and are not recommended.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CFeuyJhh-u_/

The best time to travel Bulgarian mountains is between the end of May and the end of October. September is considered the driest month of the summer months and October is already starting to get very cold in the high places and most places are already at end-of-season prices.

When thinking of tourist destinations in Europe, the first cities that come to mind are Venice, Paris, maybe Rome but Sofia, Bulgaria isn’t usually listed.

The capital of Bulgaria is an enchanting city and a wonderful place to experience the charm and history of this coastal nation.

Sofia is an incredibly affordable place to visit and is littered with ancient Roman ruins and current museums and shops.

The skyline of Sofia is composed of onion domed buildings and while it is not a huge city there is still a vibrant nightlife and young population.

During the day time be sure to check out the many archaeological sites and museums exploring the Roman rule and socialist era in Bulgaria. There is the Museum of Socialist Art, a National Museum of History and many churches that you can tour from several time periods.

There also are many beautiful tours and short trips surrounding Sofia where visitors can hike, boat or ski. Because of Bulgaria’s location, it is also easy to visit Turkey, Macedonia and other neighboring countries for travel.

The best time to travel Bulgarian mountains is between the end of May and the end of October. September is considered the driest month of the summer months and October is already starting to get very cold in the high places and most places are already at end-of-season prices.

Bulgaria might not be on the top of your list of countries you’d love to see, but when it comes to travel, thinking outside the box can really pay off. That is the case with Borovets, a popular Bulgarian ski-resort situated on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains, only 45 miles south of the capital Sofia and even closer to the main airport.

Whether it’s the summer or winter, tourists flock to Borovets to enjoy its beautiful nature and superb facilities.

Being the country’s oldest ski resort, the town is the initial point for climbing Mount Musala (9,596ft) and as such it fuses deep history with new and modern lifestyle.

More and more tourists come to Borovets every year, and it’s not just for the amazing ski slopes. Incredible views of the mountainside, pools, spas, all you can eat buffets with delicious homemade food? Consider it done.
