Traveling by bus is one of the best money-saving methods for backpackers all over the world. Many of the hottest travel destinations in South America, Southeast Asia, and beyond are well-served by cheap bus services that can take you all over the country. However, there’s one catch. Many of these bus journeys are 12 hours or more. Here are our top tips to make your journey more enjoyable!

Don’t Forget Your Eye Mask

An eye mask and earplugs are a MUST. Do not board the bus without these trusty companions. Shut out the light, block out that baby crying, and catch up on some much-needed shuteye after weeks of hostel hopping!

Treat Yourself

If there’s a possibility for an upgrade, take it. Some bus companies allow you to pay extra for more luxury services. When traveling, it can be fun to try and do everything on the smallest budget possible. But paying a little extra for reclining seats, more legroom, blankets, and refreshments never feels like a bad idea once you’re 16 hours into a 24-hour journey!

Snack Sensibly

Choose your snacks carefully. Chips and candy might seem tempting but will be regretted later when you don’t have immediate access to teeth-brushing facilities. Grab some sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of water to keep those hunger pangs at bay.

Stretch

Make the most of service stops. Sometimes, leaving the bus at 3am to go to a service station in the middle of nowhere feels very unappealing. But always take the opportunity to do some stretches and go to the toilet before heading back to your seat.

Of all the travel methods out there, going by bus certainly isn’t the most glamorous or popular one. However, it can be a great budget option and a way to get between two cities that may not have train or plane connections. If you’re planning on some bus travel, implement these strategies to make your time on the road more comfortable.

Take a Pillow

A pillow is your best ally for making sure you stay physically comfortable while riding on a bus. Whether you need support for your lumbar region or a place to rest your head as you try to get some shut-eye, pillows are a key ally in the fight for comfort while doing some bus travel.

Motion Sickness Prep

Traveling on a bus can be a disorienting experience for your stomach, as nausea is a common problem thanks to your inability to see the horizon and the bumpiness and curviness of the roads. Take medication like Dramamine or natural supplements like peppermint to feel better.

Earphones In

Unfortunately, buses can be a noisy place especially if you have chatty people onboard or if your bus is old and its engines make a racket. Take some headphones with you, which will allow you to listen to calming music or watch a film in peace.

With all kinds of technology at our fingertips when we travel now, it sure is easier to find your way around and get where you need to go. Smartphones have app stores that contain a bevy of applications that can help you find hidden treasures, get from point A to point B, and find your way to the airport for the cheapest price when you are traveling. Here are three apps you must use to dominate getting around on your trips.

Moovit

If you want to have an app in your hands that is your complete guide to public transportation, Moovit is for you. Covering nearly every major metropolitan area on Earth, this app includes buses, subways, ferries, and any other public transportation option to tell you the best and cheapest way to get from one place to another.

Google Maps

The king of all map apps is Google Maps, and it is a must-have, especially if you are looking to walk around on foot. Walking directions and street view are helpful tools that Google Maps offers, helping you to master your movements anywhere you go.

Waze

Renting a car is a popular move for many while on vacation, but you might find it difficult to find the most efficient and least busy routes to get you where you need to go. Waze is the all-in-one traffic app that uses traffic data to show you the fastest way to get to your destination, all while alerting you of potential hazards and speed traps.

There are two main reasons to travel by bus or coach: traveling on a budget and traveling somewhere that doesn’t have a train station, without a car. Buses can be tricky, but there are little things you can do to make the experience better.

Luggage

Try separating your belongings to make it easier to get what you need during the trip. Pack a small bag with a book, a bottle of water, chewing gum, a phone charger, and anything you may need. This will allow you to stow your big bag in the luggage store or in the overhead shelf without the trouble of diving into it while the vehicle is in motion.

Cover Up

In your little bus bag, make sure to have a shawl or scarf, or even a little towel. This will allow you to stay comfortable in case the air conditioning is too intense. If you’re planning to sleep en route, you may want to bring a large beanie, it will keep your head warm and you could pull it over your eyes.

Bring Tissues

Don’t just bring one kind of tissues. You will need napkins for your bus snacks, sterile wipes to use the bathroom, and gentle facial tissues in case the air conditioning gets to you.
