Rich historical heritage transformed Egypt into one of Africa’s prime tourist destinations, and most people start their journey through this country from Cairo. After exploring all the tourist attractions this city has in store, get ready to do some shopping in one of its most iconic markets.

Khan el-Khalili

If you only have enough time on your hands to visit a single market while in Cairo, Khan el-Khalili should make the cut. It’s one of the city’s most famous bazaars, dating back all the way to the 14th century. While walking through its historical gates, you’ll get to discover many local artisans and workshops, selling everything from antiques to handcrafts.

Souq Al Goma’a

If you want to mingle with the locals during your visit to Cairo, Souq Al Goma’a is the place to be. Also known as Friday market, it offers pretty much everything you need for a cheap price, but keep in mind it’s constantly overcrowded with locals and not as touristy as Khan el-Khalili.

Al Azbakeya

Book lovers visiting Egypt shouldn’t miss this market for the world while in Cairo. It’s located next to Azbakeya gardens, and it’s well-known as the best book market in this city. It features around 130 stalls, where you’ll find thousands of old, unique, and used books—some even dating back to the 19th century!

Most people visiting Egypt are there to explore its ancient pyramids, but these aren’t the only historical monuments that this country has in store. If you ever find yourself in its capital of Cairo, you’ll stumble upon beautiful mosques at every turn. Here are some of the very best.

Al-Azhar Mosque

Al-Azhar Mosque is the first mosque established in Cairo. It was commissioned in 970 and helped transform Cairo into a major center for Islamic learning in the centuries to come, helping it earn its nickname “the city of a thousand minarets”.

Mosque of Muhammad Ali

One of Cairo’s most iconic attractions, this mosque was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha in the mid-19th century. It’s located inside the Citadel of Cairo and it’s lavishly decorated with Islamic motifs, both inside and out.

Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan

This massive mosque is located in the heart of Salah al-Din Square and it’s one of the most magnificent examples of Islamic architecture in Egypt.

Mosque of Ibn Tulun

The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is the largest in all of Cairo by land area, but that’s not the only thing that makes it unique. It’s also one of the oldest mosques in all of Africa to survive in its original form to this day.

When you think of skiing destinations, what comes to mind? While your mind might wander to the peaks of the Alps or the cross-country paradises of North America, there is no question that a place like Egypt is not the first one you will think of. However, one of Cairo’s most fascinating attractions is changing that perspective: Ski Egypt is a must-visit for anyone heading to this North African country.

Located in the Mall of Egypt, Ski Egypt is the largest facility of its kind anywhere in Africa. Containing more than a kilometer of artificial slopes which are always covered in snow, no matter how hot it is outside, this is a unique experience that you would be crazy to pass up.

In addition to the slopes for those of us who enjoy skiing, there are other winter-themed attractions at this fascinating park too. From the snow penguins which live inside the attraction to the Nordic-themed playground for the kids and a cafe, there are lots of interesting things to do and see when visiting Ski Egypt.

So, in between your visits to the Pyramids of Giza and the Abu Simbel Temples, why not make time to dip into a below freezing spot that you will have a lot of fun at and never forget?

🔹 The two residential towers are a new type of Vertical Forest: the floors have cantilevered elements that interrupt the regularity of the building and create a continuous ever-changing movement, accentuated by the presence of trees and shrubs selected from local species. The combination of open and closed balconies provides the best solution for adapting to the life experiences of different groups of inhabitants by generating a transition space between nature and the human living environment. The intervention, thus designed, allows an excellent view of the tree-lined façades, enhancing the sensorial experience of the greenery and integrating the plant landscape with the architectural dimension. The irregular arrangement of the balconies allows the plants to develop freely in height and the foliage to fit perfectly into the façade design. @stefano_boeri @yibo93 @fra_cesa @marcodomgiorgio Progetto: Stefano Boeri Architetti China Luogo: Huanggang, Cina Cliente: Beijing Easyhome Vertical Forest Real Estate Co.,Ltd.

A post shared by Stefano Boeri Architetti (@stefanoboeriarchitetti) on

The architecture behind this project is the Italian Stefano Boeri. He projected the vertical forest that will consist of three apartment blocks, seven stories high and 98×98 feet big. On those three buildings, there will be 350 trees and over 100 types of evergreen shrubs for a total of 14,000. The plants have a bigger role than simply to look nice. They will provide a natural shade, improve the quality of air, and do what they do best—provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide.

Planting more trees is crucial for fighting climate change. “Cairo can become the first North African metropolis to take on the great challenge of climate change and ecological conversion,” Boeri said, as quoted by Matador Network.

The same company is also responsible for creating vertical forests in the Netherlands, Italy, and Albania, which tells us that green architecture is becoming more and more popular. We’re sure the final project will be absolutely stunning and can’t wait for the chance to visit it.
