The Atacama Desert in Chile, one of the driest places on Earth, transforms into a breathtaking spectacle of color during its rare and remarkable wildflower bloom. This phenomenon, known as “Desierto Florido” or “Flowering Desert,” occurs sporadically, often every 5 to 7 years, when rainfall is higher than usual.

The spectacle is a photographer’s and nature lover’s dream. As the desert floor awakens, it’s carpeted with millions of flowers, ranging from vibrant purples and pinks to radiant yellows and whites. This bloom not only provides a stunning visual display but also a unique ecological event, as it supports a variety of wildlife, attracting birds, insects, and small mammals.

The best time to witness this magical transformation is usually between September and November. Visitors can explore different areas of the desert to see various flower species. Popular spots include the coastal town of Huasco, where the purple pata de guanaco blooms, and the hills around Vallenar, known for their colorful arrays of mariposa lilies and aƱaƱucas.

Photographing the Desierto Florido requires patience and respect for the delicate ecosystem. The use of tripods is recommended to avoid trampling the flowers, and visitors are encouraged to stay on designated paths. Capturing the contrast of vivid wildflowers against the stark desert backdrop creates not just beautiful images, but also lasting memories of nature’s resilience and splendor in the most unexpected places.

You canā€™t go wrong with picking out Chile as your next travel destination. This South American country has some of the most diverse landscapes in the world, offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, and has a rich cultural heritage. With that being said, here are some things you should know before actually heading there.

You Donā€™t Need a Visa to Visit Chile

If you have a US passport, you wonā€™t need a visa to visit Chile. But keep in mind that you can only stay up to 90 days as a tourist. Anything beyond that requires a visit to the Chilean Immigration Office, where you can extend your stay by another 90 days for a $100 fee.

Chilean Spanish is Different Than Standard Spanish

Locals speak Spanish, but it is slightly different than the one you learned in school. Chileans use particular dialects, phrases, and pronunciations, making Chilean Spanish hard to follow for those who have a basic knowledge of Spanish. However, plenty of people speak English at a high level, so communication shouldnā€™t be a problem.

Chile Can Be Quite Expensive

Chile is significantly more expensive compared to other parts of South America. This makes it a less budget-friendly experience, so keep that in mind when planning your budget. Still, there are ways to make your visit to Chile less expensive, but you will have to compromise.

Best Time to Visit in Winter

Those wanting to experience Chile at its best will head there in the winter. The weather is best from December to February, and the countryā€™s astonishing landscapes are at their finest during this time of the year. However, keep in mind that this is also the time when itā€™s most crowded.

Most people visiting Chile are there for its stunning glaciers, geysers, and desert landscapes, but did you know its modern architecture is also top-of-the-line? The capital city of Santiago is home to quite a few impressive contemporary buildings, and here are three worth checking out.

Costanera Center

Some of Santiagoā€™s most imposing skyscrapers are a part of the Costanera Center. This business complex is home to some of Santiagoā€™s most notable modern buildings, including a 62-story high-rise Gran Torre Santiago, a six-floor shopping mall, and three more skyscrapers housing hotels and office buildings.

Museum of Memory and Human Rights

If skyscrapers simply arenā€™t your thing and you want to explore more grounded, low-key examples of contemporary architecture, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights is the place to be. Its stunning glass-and-copper was designed by a group of Brazilian architects from the firm Estudio America.

Santiago BahĆ”’Ć Temple

Santiago BahĆ”’Ć Temple was designed by Canadian architect Siamak Hariri, and it won many awards over the years. Like all BahĆ”Ź¼Ć houses of worship, this one is circular and nine-sided. It comes with nine entrances, nine pathways, and nine fountains, while its sides are meant to resemble sails separated by glass, allowing the light to come in.

Tourists usually head to Argentina when searching for South Americaā€™s most spectacular glaciers, but you can also find quite a few in its neighboring country of Chile. Amazing glaciers are scattered all around it, and here are three that you should definitely check out during your visit.

Grey Glacier

The title of Chileā€™s most picture-perfect glacier belongs to this attraction in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Grey Glacier flows into the lake of the same name, and there are boat tours in the area allowing you to explore its jagged icebergs at a close distance, reaching 6 kilometers in width and over 30 meters in height.

BrĆ¼ggen Glacier

Another spectacular glacier located within the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, BrĆ¼ggen is the longest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica. Itā€™s also known by the nickname PĆo XI Glacier, and itā€™s one of the rare glaciers in this area to record growth in the past century.

San Rafael Glacier

Laguna San Rafael is one of Chileā€™s most breathtaking natural wonders, and the glacier named after it is its biggest draw. Itā€™s a part of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, and the arc-shaped coastal lake surrounding it is just as spectacular as the glacier itself.

As important as it is to try to keep a regular sleep routine, when traveling, sometimes itā€™s challenging to be too strict. Whether youā€™ve crossed several time zones and are experiencing serious jet lag or are just too excited about being in a new location, you donā€™t have to worry about not being able to sleep. In fact, there are some places that youā€™ll actually enjoy more because of it. While the bulk of tourist attractions are at their most popular during the day, there are a special few that can only be enjoyed in the dark. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Northern Lights

Aurora borealis can be enjoyed from many locations including Canada, Alaska, and the northern parts of the Nordic countries in Europe. One of our favorite spots is TromsĆø in Norway, which is also known for its wildlife and is a great location for whale watching.

Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico

As if Caribbean beaches werenā€™t already beautiful enough, this beach in Puerto Rico actually glows in the dark. Mosquito Bay, also known as Bio-luminescent Bay, is home to a species of phytoplankton that emit a neon blue glow as they move. The glow is only visible at night.

Atacama Desert

This desert plateau in Chile, South America, is consistently rated one of the best locations for stargazing in the world. The altitude and lack of light pollution make for a crystal-clear view of not only stars, but the entire Milky Way.

Chile is worth the visit for its natural beauty alone and many of the natural wonders youā€™ll find in this country are one of a kind. From volcanoes and geysers to caves and unusual rock formations, here are three-picture perfect spots that will make you fall in love with Chileā€™s nature.

Marble Caves

Mother Nature truly outdid herself when creating one of Chileā€™s most Instagram-friendly attractions. Marble Caves have to be seen to be believed and theyā€™re safely tucked away underneath an unusual rock formation in Chile Chico. They were created by 6,200 years of erosion as waves crashed into their calcium carbonate cliffs,

Valle de la Luna

Valle de la Luna aka Valley of the Moon will make you feel like you stepped on the surface of the Moon. This desert landscape near San Pedro de Atacama looks straight out of this world thanks to its pink-streaked mountains, unique rock formations, and scenic sunsets.

El Tatio

If you want to see over 80 geysers in one place while in Chile, El Tatio is the place to be. Located in the very heart of the Andes Mountains, this is the third-largest geyser field in the world, and over 100,000 tourists visit it every year to view the geysers, bath in hot springs, and enjoy their natural scenery.

From waterfalls and glaciers to salt flats and canyons, naturals wonders are scattered all around South America. Valleys also fall under this category and some of them even share the same nameā€”Valley of the Moon aka Valle de la Luna. Moon valleys can be found in several South American countries and theyā€™re all unique in their own right.

Chile

Chileā€™s Moon Valley is located in the heart of the Atacama desert, close to the city of San Pedro de Atacama. It earned this nickname because its unique stone and sand formations are somewhat similar to the surface of the Moon, especially if you find yourself here at sunset.

Argentina

Argentinaā€™s Ischigualasto Provincial Park is also known by the nickname Valle de la Luna due to its moon-like landscapes. Itā€™s home to many uniquely shaped badlands, cliffs, and rock formations, created by water and wind erosion.

Bolivia

Located a short ride away from Boliviaā€™s capital of La Paz, Valle de la Luna aka Killa Qhichwa is one of the countryā€™s most popular natural attractions. Erosion in this area led to the creation of tall spires primarily made of clay. The mineral content of the mountains led to varying colors of the spires, giving them a moon-like look.
